Driver Cody C. Spears, 27, and back-seat passenger Viola Tobert, 59, both of Okmulgee died at the scene about 7 p.m., police officer Leland Ashley said.
Three other people in the car were injured, said Tina Wells, Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman. A 6-year-old boy and Spears’ 23-year-old wife are in fair condition and a 7-year-old girl is in critical condition at Saint Francis Hospital. Their names have not been released.
The car was getting ready to leave the shoulder after a flat tire was repaired when it was hit by a car police said was driven by Nancy Gail Rueb, 42. Rueb was booked into the Tulsa County Jail on two complaints of DUI manslaughter. Bond has been set at $100,000, jail records show.
The children were being raised by Tolbert, who was their grandmother, Wells said.
In June 2002 Rueb was convicted of reckless driving after originally being charged with driving under the influence, according to court documents. She received a 90-day suspended sentence and was fined $500.
