Officer Christopher Hortness has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, a police spokesman said.

The shooting happened about 5:30 a.m. at Country Oaks Apartments, 3101 NW 150 about one-fourth mile west of May Avenue, police Capt. Steve McCool said.

A man called police and said Johnson was threatening to kill himself with a knife, McCool said. When Hortness went into the apartment, Johnson was cutting himself. Hortness told him to put down the knife, but the officer said Johnson charged the officer. Hortness fired his gun several times, striking the victim, McCool said.

Paramedics were called, but Johnson had already died.
