Father of Sam Bradford: ‘I think Sam kind of knows’ decision regarding future

NORMANKent Bradford, the father of Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, said his son is taking the time to make sure his decision about whether to stay in school or declare for the NFL Draft is the right one.

NewsOK Related Articles

"I think he kind of knows what he would like," Kent told The Oklahoman in a phone interview Tuesday. "He's just trying to be sure that his choice is the actual proper choice."

Kent said he didn’t know when his son would make an announcement, but that it would probably go through the university.

“When he feels it’s right,” Kent said, “he’ll let the right people know.”

Sam, who Kent said received a first-round projection from the NFL Draft Advisory Committee, is projected by most draft analysts to be one of the top-two quarterbacks taken in the draft if he comes out.

The Sooners are still waiting on the decisions of junior tight end Jermaine Gresham and junior offensive tackle Trent Williams, who have both said they're considering leaving early for the NFL. Gresham received a first-round projection from the Advisory Committee; Williams, a second-round.

The trio has until midnight Thursday to declare for the draft. Players who declare have 72 hours after the deadline to change their minds, assuming they haven’t hired an agent.

Tuesday was a busy day for Bradford family. Tuesday morning, Sam was honored at a ceremony in the morning by Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, who declared Jan. 13 “Sam Bradford Day.”

Sam was spotted wearing the cast again on his injured left thumb, after he wore just a splint preparing for and during the BCS National Championship.

But Kent said the plan was always for Sam to wear the cast again for about a month after the title game as he recovers from torn ligaments.

Greg you are a moron to think someone who won the heisman last year and won two championships would be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round. You need to go back to the basics and watch more football. You dumb sooner fans put this guy on a pedestal...He has NEVER WON A CHAMPIONSHIP!!! You guys make it look like he was won 4! Damn, this guys is such a 'great' leader he can't win EVEN 1! He chokes under pressure! He'll never be a 'great' player like you think.
Jason, Tulsa - Jan 15, 2009 at 12:19 pm
adam, you are a moron. tebow is projected as a H-back in the pros, maybe a 2nd rounder, but more likely lower. bradford would be a top 5 pick. if you want to argue that he's a better overall player, fine, but you are a moron if you think he's a higher draft pick.

Have you noticed that Heisman Trophey winners that played college football in the state of Oklahoma play pro football in Detroit? Why is that? Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Barry Sanders...Sam Bradford? The three had good careers in Detroit but never made it to a Super Bowl. Sam this OSU Cowboy wishes you the best! If Detroit has contacted you and said that you're going to be the first pick of the draft...then I would stay in school.

Sam Bradford is a finance major w/a 3.95 GPA. So if money is his only issue, we should be talking about which of his 3 mansions he'll spend his off-seasons in. He's a smart young man & is probably being lambasted w/all the what-if's from all directions. It sounds like he's being his typical "cool & calm in-the-pocket" before he decides in which direction to pass his future, & he makes good decisions. Best of luck to you, Sam. (By the way, for all we know, he could decide to stay 2 more years.)
Melanie, Morristown - Jan 14, 2009 at 8:40 am
I changed my mind Sam. Like David down below said, the O line is leaving and those talented receivers are going except one. So go and enter the draft and hope the Vikings trade up to get you. I would hate to see your talent wasted in another BCS game under an offensive system that cannot put talented guys like yourself in position to win the big ones.
Titan, Winchester - Jan 14, 2009 at 2:23 am
Sam stay at Norman. With the Sponsors of Detroit Lions football struggling to sell cars, there may not be a football team there much longer. Or even worse, you might wind up playing for a team with below average talent for years to come.

Sam has a big decision on his hans obviously. I still think he goes especially if Williams and Grisham go. With Igleasias, Cheney and Manny gone as well. Then again he is a one of a kind that really values the opportunity to finish some unfinished business. Whatever the decision rather it be back in the Crimson #14 or a Lions Jersey(should they not trade down) I wish him the best.

David, college athletes can and do insure every year. Doesn't mean he should stay though.
Joshua - Jan 13, 2009 at 10:03 pm
- Offensive line is leaving (the one that gave him hours to pass).

- Risk of Injury - collegiate athletes can't insure.

- Anything could happen at OU next year, nothing he could do would INCREASE his dollar value.

- The "collegiate experience" is overrated (not to mention he's had one).

- 30-50 million dollars is on the table with a nod from Sam. C

*** Considering the above - would any of YOU stay? Really? ***
David, Oklahoma City - Jan 13, 2009 at 9:48 pm
If Tebow is lucky, he will be an NFL back in the mold of Paul Hornung of Notre Dame. A running back who can throw the ball in an option situation. Nothing more. In today's game he will be a "wild hog" type of back. Not a quarterback, not a running back. But a siturational back, not commanding much money. Bradford, on the other hand, has a chance to be a really good quarterback, but could use another year of experience and maturation. Will he go: don't know but would say that he could benefit from another year of college play. Even then, he may not go as high. My prediction, he will stay for another year.

If he were stayin I think he would have made the announcment during the OU-UT game on big Monday in front of a big crowd. I think hes gone, but thats just my take. When Woods came back to OSU for his Sr. year, he announced it in front of a big OSU basketball crowd.
Bobby, holdenville - Jan 13, 2009 at 9:33 pm
I hope he stays. Here's why. College comes once in a lifetime, and the mark andmemories are indelible. For an example, check out this pic of Wayman Tisdale. This is right after he had his partial leg amputation from bone cancer:

http://www.waymantisdale.com/scripts/gallery_popup.php?id=121&x=700&y=467

Notice the logo on his prosthesis. Is it the Pacers? Nope. The Suns? Nah. Kings? No. It's OU. Wonder why that is? Of all the things he could have picked, he picked the OU logo. That, to me, says volumes. Check it out. Good luck Sam!

I am a Longhorn fan and whatever Sam Bradford decides to do I wish him the best of luck. If he stays at Oklahoma than I wish him all the success in the world and I hope he has another great season. If he goes to the NFL I wish him the same and more since he will be at the next level. A quarter back of his caliber makes a conference great and 2008 was the year of the QB.
Good Luck Sam Bradford on your decision.

As poorly as Sam Bradford did in the first two years, throwing for 86 touchdowns, which is better than any quarterback has ever accomplished, he may do worse next year and still have a great year. Tebow's second year his team went 8-4 and lost a bowl game. But Tebow's raising people from the dead and touring as the blustering Gaston in "Beauty and the Beast" put a damper on his wins and losses although he was able to glorify himself with the Heisman win as a sophomore.

Jason White Junior is going to stay and the Sooners will do much worse next year. Next year pro scouts will be saying " who in the Sam Hill is Sam Bradford" ?
mister, bogata - Jan 13, 2009 at 8:20 pm
I think Sam is staying. Keep in mind folks, he needs to announce whether to declare NOT whether to stay at OU. If he wanted to go, he would have announced it already and probably would be the first or second pick. But given the delay, I think he is considering going but his gut and most likely decision is to stay. Again, if he were going, he would declare and likely would have already done so when the spotlight was there. But I think he agrees that he has some more maturing to do and I hope that Stoops and company will encourage him to become a better leader for the team. OU needs more than just the QB saying, that's ok boys, well make it. We need Bradford to get some fire and drive, that is what separated Ryan and Manning from Bradford; their fire. Even TeBow, while I dislike him due to the media's sex fest with him, but he is a better leader than Bradford. Not a better quarterback, but Tebow WILLED Florida to the win and completely outshined Bradford despite OU being the obvious better team and talent. This has to change, and it starts with Stoops. And since Hypl is coming back and the coaching seems to be solid, AND the fact that Stoops is not recruiting qb's, I feel that Bradford always intended to come back to OU but that he's taking his time to decide IF he should leave. So the question is NOT whether he will return, the question is if he will tip the scale to leaving. He'll have two more days to consider leaving. ....

Real, bonafide Sooner fans want what is best for Sam and for Sam to be comfortable. For me, I would love to have the opportunity to see Sam another year and prove everyone wrong by taking new, possibly better, talent to the NC game and win. But, Sam, do what is best and any decision you make leaves you the all time best OU QB. Good luck. OU will make do and succeed. They may have to work a bit harder accomplishing that mission, but that is why those coaches get paid what they get paid. Personally, I think you can go to KC and immediately start and flourish.

Desiderius, Uptown - Jan 13, 2009 at 7:44 pm
OU loses their entire line, probably their all-american tight end and all of their recievers. Given that fact, it is hard to imagine Bradford's numbers not falling off next year. Also, he runs the risk of getting hurt.

Bradford is a very intriguing prospect. People ding him for playing in a spread offense but you can't deny his numbers. He also throws a very catchable ball and is by all accounts a very good kid. The type of kid you want representing your franchise. Someone in the top 10 picks will take a chance on him. That means 10s of millions of dollars. Last year, Matt Ryan got $72 million gaurenteed when he was picked number 3. Bradford is not as good of a prospect as Ryan so he will probably get less. But even if he gets $20 million less, we are still talking about $50 million. That is too much money to pass up. He is gone and well he should be.

Yea it looks like he is leaving. If he had his heart set on coming back he would have already said so. Sounds like he is making sure leaving for the NFL is what is best for him. After all, no announcement means he is coming back, so he could just say nothing. Making an announcement makes its sound like he is going. Barring an injury, staying would do nothing to really harm his draft status. Going by what scouts say they focus more on the throwing decisions, skills, and ability to read defenses as more of a hallmark for evaluating a qb than they do stats, the team's record or level of competition. Several examples could be cited to validate that point.

Ed Lova, Oklahoma City - Jan 13, 2009 at 4:43 pm
Jill, while I dont necessarily agree with Adam, at least not with regards to the NFL, I must point out that technically Bradford has about as much experience as Tebow. Tebow is a true junior with 2 full years under his belt plus one year as where he would play a couple of plays per game. Bradford is a redshirt Sophomore, which means he has also played two full years, and has one redshirt year to learn the system. Plus, I dont think the win-loss is an accurate measure by itself.

Scott/Indian Territory ... wasn't implying that Bradford would make the announcement as a "grandstanding" stunt on his part. I agree. He wouldn't necessarily do that. But, if I'm the university and learn he's going to stay, I make as big of a deal out of it as I can...and that would be in front of a rabid full house at the LNC.

I think you guys might be right. Last night's game on national TV would have been the time for Bradford to indicate he was staying. But wait that is what Tebow would do to increase his ego. Bradford is a team player and I bet he has already told a lot of his teammates what he is doing. He is a class act and will the right thing for him without the fanfare. I hope he stays but stay or go I wish him well.
William, Fairfield - Jan 13, 2009 at 4:31 pm
"Who cares...he is still the second best qb in CB behind Tebow." Adam, it's impossible to compare them as quarterbacks because they play a different style, they're a year apart and you cannot separate their performance from the rest of the players on offense. Tebow as a sophmore went 9-4. He lost his bowl game to Michigan. By that measure alone, Bradford is a better quarterback than Tebow. We all know which one the NFL is more interested in, but again, we're comparing apples and oranges, because of the differences in style of play. The correct answer is that they're both great quarterbacks, and it's almost impossible to compare them.

JMO, if I put myself in his shoes. Going to the NFL is the no-brainer decision if money is your only motivator. However, foregoing the NFL, staying in school one more year and relying on faith that the great NFL opportunity will be there again next year is a much more difficult decision to wrestle. Therefore, you need to make sure your choice is the actual proper choice.

Kansas City just signed Scott Piloi as General Manager away from New England. Sam has said he sees himself most closely resembling Tom Brady as far as his game goes. With Stafford already declared and most likely Detroit's pick, and Kansas City now beginning the process of structuring themselves after the Patriots, I wonder if this will affect his decision. KC would be a great fit for him. Close to OKC, doesn't have to start right away, lots of pieces in place.
Scott, Tulsa - Jan 13, 2009 at 4:05 pm
From a selfish fan's perspective I'd love for him to stay. I can even convince myself that working with a makeshift line and new receivers will better prepare him for the adpatibility he'll need in the NFL.

Whatever he decides, I hope he is at peace with the decision and enjoys many years of success.

Yeah, there has been no new action by the coaching staff to get another QB. One would think they would at least be going after a highly rated JUCO QB to come in and compete with Landry if Sam were leaving. Maybe they (McCoy, Bradford, Williams, Gresham, etc.) all talked about it and decided to give it one more try and see if they could go out on top. After all, with Bradford, Broyles, all three RB's, and Gresham back that's a good start to any offense. It seems as likely as the other scenarios, especially with nothing happening related to any QB's on the recruiting trail.

There's another story on how Stoops and Company were making mad dashes to get QB's signed a year or so ago as they would have a QB scholarship available. There are now three, including Sam. As far as I know and from the reading at different websites, Stoops has not been doing so lately. That would tell me that he's staying put. Doesn't OU usually have three QB's on the roster? We do now that includes Sam. I think with McCoy staying and Heupel as well, I'm willing to say he stays. What I don't get is why is he waiting so long?
