Ron Artest had the Lakers’ "L” logo shaved into the back of his head and "World Champions” in Chinese on one side. On the other side he inscribed "Chatty,” the nickname of a recently deceased childhood friend he said is the best basketball player he’s ever seen.

Charles Barkley, on TNT’s broadcast, wasn’t a big fan of Artest’s new look.
"You know my rule where once you get past 22 (years old) you can’t wear throwback jerseys,” Barkley said. "At some point you’re a grown man. What is the age when you can’t carve crap into your hair?”
At the Lakers’ ring ceremony before the opener, Artest, who signed a five-year $33 million deal, took the microphone near center court.
"L.A.! Big city of dreams! What’s cracking?” Artest told the crowd. "We’ve got a long journey ahead of us... I’ll holler back at y’all soon.”
