Oklahoma City Thunder roars in Detroit

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Their emotion said it all: the fist-pumps and the chest-bumps, their taunting scowls and their triumphant shouts.

This is a different Thunder team, and if there was any remaining doubt following the season-opening thumping of league doormat Sacramento, Friday night’s 91-83 road victory over Detroit squashed the lingering skepticism.

Oklahoma City walked into The Palace of Auburn Hills, one of the NBA’s toughest venues, and silenced a raucous crowd celebrating its team’s home opener. The Thunder took the court with a confident swagger that was absent a year ago. By the time the players walked off the floor, after closing out the Pistons with a dominant fourth quarter, they knew they no longer would be the league’s pushovers.

The Thunder is 2-0 in 2009-10 after a 2-24 start last season in which victory No. 2 didn’t come until Nov. 29.

"I think we’re a lot tougher,” said Russell Westbrook. "Everybody’s playing tougher when it comes down to getting the stops we need to and getting the rebounds we need to. That’s helping us.”

No one epitomized the Thunder’s new and improved heart, hustle and resiliency more than Westbrook, the second-year point guard who experienced more than his share of growing pains last season.

After a dreadful first half in which he struggled with his shot, defense and turnovers, Westbrook responded by leading his team as it went on to outscore the Pistons 53-38 in the final 24 minutes.

He finished with 10 points, 10 assists and five rebounds for his second straight double-double. He had the play of the game late in the fourth quarter with the Thunder nursing a four-point lead. After center Ben Wallace blocked Westbrook’s layup on one end, Westbrook hustled back and recovered in time to swat down what was a wide-open 3-pointer in transition by guard Ben Gordon.

Westbrook was fouled while taking the ball up the court and made two free throws to push the lead to six with 3:50 remaining.

When it was over, the Thunder had hounded the Pistons into 4-for-17 shooting (23.5 percent) in the fourth quarter and held Detroit to zero assists in the period.

Westbrook and rookie James Harden combined for more assists (18) than that Pistons collected as a team (12).

"We played with a great passion for the game,” coach Scott Brooks said. "Before every game, the message that I give to all of our guys is, ‘Ask yourself did you play hard tonight, and did you play for your teammates?’ And I thought we did that.”

The Thunder sputtered early, making just 8-of-23 shots, and watched the Pistons race to a 24-16 lead after the first quarter. OKC turned the tide, however, with a team effort in the second half.

Nick Collison came off the bench and contributed eight points and eight rebounds. Etan Thomas provided a presence in the post with six points, three rebounds and three blocked shots. And Kevin Durant had a team-high 25 points with 12 rebounds.

Durant scowled at the Pistons’ faithful with his poster dunk over Tayshaun Prince with 9:31 to play. Westbrook turned to his bench and let out a roar when he found Nenad Krstic under the basket for a reverse layup with 2:43 to play. And the entire Thunder bench jumped for joy when Thabo Sefolosha pushed the lead to nine with a corner 3 with 2:03 remaining.

"Hopefully we all can recognize what we’re doing to be successful,” Collison said. "And hopefully we’ll rationally look at it and say, ‘This is a lot of fun and we want to keep doing it so we can keep winning and keep having fun.’ If we see something changing, some complacency setting in or something like that, hopefully we’ll be able to step up and say something to get it stopped.”

Editor's note: The original story stated that Westbrook had 10 rebounds, 10 assists and five rebounds. Westbrook had 10 points, 10 assists and five rebounds.

Go Thunder baby!!!!
Michael, Oklahoma City - Oct 31, 2009 at 8:09 pm
I'm so excited about this season's team! We killed the Kings (granted, they are bad) and then we beat a playoff-caliber team on the road in their home opener at one of the NBA's toughest places to play.

Russell Westbrook looks to have a chance in leading the NBA in assists, Kevin Durant looks like a threat to win the scoring title, and Jeff Green is his usual rock solid self. Harden looked good last night, Kristic is money from mid-range, and even Collison and Thomas put in quality minutes. We are only gonna get better and better. Imagine guys like Ibaka and Harden a few months down the road!

GO THUNDER!

Dear Rob,

Methinks you are the pot calling the kettle black on the comment of the "Pungent Sound".

While I'm NOT from Seattle, I can't remember anytime that the Sound has been tied to being feces infested, nor to making athletes sick, as the okieland river(canal), eh?

While you may gloat over the dumpster retrieved misfits wearing the okaysee uniform, remember that so far this season you've played the worst team in the league, and a mediocre team missing one of it's starters, it's not like you've knocked off the Lakers or Celts 2 games running...

What we're seeing is what was predicted by the NBA experts, "the most improved NBA team" and the groundwork for "the playoffs in 2010-11". These experienced analysts know what they're taking about. What we're seeing from the Seattle trolls, like Paulie Boy and his numerous alter egos, is sour grapes. They couldn't recognize the building blocks being established by the PBC in Seattle and they're sure not going to see the results coming to fruition in OKC. They still haven't even figured out how to build an acceptable NBA arena, much less a quality team bound for a championship. Let's face it: Seattle had 1(one) NBA crown in 49 years. The Thunder will have one before Seattle funds a new arena. OKC has passed the Sonics behind, in the Pungent Sound where they belong. RW, T-Bolt, KD, JG, ND are the future of the NBA. Seattle is the future of the MLS (Minor League Soccer).

poor pitiful paulette. Still stuck in her deadend job with nothing to do but hope someone will read her frequent posts on a newspaper forum in a city s/he despises. I see life hasn't gotten any more exciting or fulfilling for you sweetheart. Sucks for your only fun to be trolling on a forum with about three readers who don't have you on ignore. I don't, sweetie. It's too much fun to read, knowing you think you're some comedic genius when everything you write is tripe. Keep it coming dearie. I need a few laughs every day.

Really nice defensive performance last night. In the final minutes, the Thunder were taking them deep into the shot clock. Even when the Pistons scored, they had to use a lot of time to do it. Everyone knew Gordon would try to take over the game, but they did a nice job of containing him. Westbrook had two key blocks down the stretch. His second saved what was a wide open look for three from Gordon. Also very impressed with their interior passing. Harden didn't score much, but for his second game, he had quite a few assists. Another double-double for Westbrook. Real tests this week. If they can even split with Portland and LA, I'd call that a success.
Damon, Midwest City - Oct 31, 2009 at 12:07 pm
well, i'm very happy with the 2-0 start. at this piont in the season we certainly don't know how good the kings, pistons and even the thunder are but the thunder have been fun to watch. i'm trying to temper my excitement but obviously this team looks completely different then they did this time last season.
David, Sallisaw - Oct 31, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Alf, he won't be able to play those type of minutes without wearing him out this year. However, I expect him to play 38-39 minutes a night. I think they will protect him from playing those minutes because eventually those minutes will take years off his career. He could play 42 minutes a night but I don't think that's good for the long term future of the franchise or second half of the season.
There is not much depth and I don't expect Etan Thomas to produce like he has the first two games. There are better bigs on the schedule coming this next week.
James Harden will be the second best player on the Thunder by the end of the season.

Paul's mad that his mother ran away with a circus clown shortly after he turned 12. Since then, he has been living in a community center selling tricks.

Well I know you naysayers are talking just as the fans that are extremely excited about 2-0 but remember you play one at a time and stay focused and if they don't look to far down the road stay hungry and keep playing together they will definitely surprise some teams this year....Good work Scott Brooks keep doing what you doing and keep working these guys and making them excel

Cheeks is the best mentor on earth for Westbrook. He is close to beloved by Blazer faithful, even though he struggled as a Head Coach. Go to Youtube and pull up where He helps a young girl with the National Anthem. Be ready to have a lump in your throat. He's a great guy! Wonder how he would have done in Portland without Zach, Bonzi and Darius ( a horrifying trifecta indeed!). Thought he got jobbed in Phillie....
The Thunder is much improved. Looking forward to tomorrow night!
thebrickman, portland - Oct 31, 2009 at 10:38 am
No kidding you can't wait for that moment Paul - right now you're hope of all hopes is that if they start losing in bunches you might be able to remember how to write funny stuff. For an increasingly long time you've been in a serious drought.

Was the Mo Cheeks on the Thunder bench???? Impressive play by Westbrook last night - and Derrick (ok - Etan) Thomas made some important swats down the stretch. Impressive win!
Chris, Jones - Oct 31, 2009 at 10:10 am
A WIN IS STILL A WIN, A ROAD WIN IS A GOOD WIN. If OKC can keep their opponents guessing, not becoming unidimensional, relying on any one player, continued success is highly possible. OKC will come up against a better opponent eventually, but until then let the THUNDER roar, they and the people of Oklahoma City have earned it.

The Thunder never stopped, they just kept coming with the defense. They did something last night that was rare last season--to be able to come from behind and finish a game with a lead. I hope we get to see more good basketball from this bunch! We have a pretty good stack of players now that are only going to get better! I hope we get win 3 Sunday!

Durant played 43+ minutes and almost 42 minutes Wednesday -- league leading numbers. Do you think that is sustainable?

It's all about finding that chemistry. They didn't have it last year and hopefully they will this year. I hope they hang on to that hunger and want it more. Seems like last year they played with most teams but would give up in the 4th. Maybe last year left a bad enough tase in their mouths that they will fight harder! I'm looking forward to to see them progress this season.

We all know that Detroit missed Rip. Nevertheless, the Thunder still had to do their part. Road win is a road win in this league. Really liked the play of Harden dishing the ball and Thomas' physical presence in the middle. No one is yelling playoffs but this team, if healthy, might just surprise us all. Good job OKC!

To come on this comment section and say anything negative about the Thunder would be a bit immature at this point in the season.
The team has improved alot from last season. It starts with not hiring an idiot as your coach. Brooks has been around alot of basketball and had to learn the little things to survive as a player. P.J. hurt the development of many young players. They had to have an in season training camp.
Maurice is also teaching Russell Westbrook patience in the offense. Westbrook is a combo guard but is showing signs that he can put the ball in the right position for the scorer, something that was rare last season. Also, Westbrook looks to be in great shape. Maurice's work with Westbrook, may eventually prove my theory that I have promoted on here and the radio-Westbrook not being a point guard-wrong.
However, he looks great at two with Harden running the point, who is a shooting guard that might be a very good point guard in the league.
At this point, both seem like they are capable of running both positions. Not many teams have that luxury.
Finally, Kevin Durant will lead the league in scoring, or should this season. He is special.
This team is probably a 34 win team because of the depth and bench but the product on the floor is improving and the casual fan should come and watch them. The entertainment value is where many of us expected it to be last year.
Snack, tomorrow is a good test for the Thunder but Portland better come to play because Durant could easily drop 40 any night and bring a victory to the Thunder.
David, Oklahoma City - Oct 31, 2009 at 8:33 am
We didn't give up the lead in the fourth. We played solid ball the entire game and didn't really have one of those big droughts where we had to play catch-up towards the middle of the game. We won on the road. No one thinks beating Sacramento or Detroit means we're even playoff material yet. But, it demonstrates a big difference between this team in comparison to last year. They're more mature, they're playing like a team. Good job Thunder.

I liked the energy on the defensive end. With rebounding and ball movement, this team has the players who can knock down the shots and will become more formidable as they play with each other. Coach Brooks is doing a great job.

Portland Snack, nobody around here is predicting a divisonal or NBA championship. And we'll have to see if a .500 record for the season is attainable. But we are exited because we're seeing steady and incremental improvement in one of the league's youngest teams..baby steps, so to speak. Most of us have realistic goals. Namely, just seeing the team play hard and get better night in and night out. Portland will be a great test for this team in that we had difficulty with the matchups last season. But what was especially encouraging in this game is that a multitude of guys made plays in the fourth quarter to win a game on the road when the lead had dwindled to four. Most in this city had 32 to 38 wins cirlced in as benchmark goals for this season. Yeah, Rip Hamilton didn't play, but Ben Gordon didn't light us up either.

We'll see how our interior defense holds up Sunday evening.

I think most of us still have the same expectation that the Thunder will win somewhere around 35 games this season. Portland, LAL and Houston will all be good benchmarks. I think Houston is the most winnable of the three, but I would like to at least see if the Thunder can hang keep the Blazers and Lakers games competitive to the end.

I don't think we can over-emphasize how important it is that the Thunder is playing slower this year. The pace gives Westbrook more time to see what can develop. I think the chemistry he's developing with Krstic is essential. And speaking of Krstic; he, Thomas, Collison and Green are all playing good defense. Green may be a bit undersized power forward, but that's also allowed him to do a lot of nice things defending the pick and roll.
