WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe led a Republican boycott Tuesday of a key committee to force a more complete analysis of a sweeping climate change bill.

After opening up the session, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, appealed to the Oklahoma Republican and others to return to the panel’s hearing room.

Boxer defended the current analysis of the measure by Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and also scheduled a Tuesday afternoon meeting with the Environmental Protection Agency to go over its work.

okintx - Point taken. I wish I knew what the right answers were for these issues; I just know that it's much easier to make them worse than it is to make them better, and garbage legislation like cap & trade isn't the answer.

It sure has been interesting reading... I suppose I should get some work done so I can cover the increased costs of my utilities and health insurance premiums.

Jon, the only point I was trying to make is that there is as much rhetoric being funded/pushed by the O&G industry as there is from the far left. I too am somewhere in the middle. And for the record, I think cap and trade will be a disater (except for Goldman Sach, who will no doubt find a way to somehow make a killing). I'll leave the healthcare comment along, except to say I just went through my open enrollment for 2010 - my same plan went up 12%. I don't know what the exact right answer may be, but it has to stop!
okintx, Dallas - Nov 3, 2009 at 5:08 pm
i would say global warming is *part* of climate change. just as global cooling would be. i would also say earth's climate has been warming and cooling, for whatever reasons, for eons. i'm not convinced that mankind has much to do with either if at all. that aside, we should all do our part to reduce, reuse, and recycle. it's the smart thing to do.
Buzz Lightyear, OKC - Nov 3, 2009 at 5:04 pm
Outlaw, the climate is always changing, and has been doing so since creation. Sometimes it seems there are cooling patterns and sometimes the opposite is true. I just don't see anything that makes me want to crash the economy because the polar bears are in trouble. Oh wait I forgot, they are increasing in number. Oh, if I could only find some reason to live in enough fear, to let the government take control of my life!
BILLY, MUSTANG - Nov 3, 2009 at 5:04 pm
Outlaw You avoid the question when you don't want to think. Why was it that a year ago all you heard was "global warming." Now the only difference is, is that it is called climate change because even you will buy in to the fact that the climate is changing. One they get YOU to buy in to the fact that the climate changesthat can convince you that it should cost us SOMETHING for producing the "change." Outlaw is a funny name for a lemming! BILLY, MUSTANG

Your ridiculous name calling aside, you've yet to offer up anything of substance on the subject Billy. Global Warming and Climate Change are two totally different things. If you don't/can't tell the difference then that's your problem. The climate is changing Billy, it's a fact that you can't dispute with science or evidence.
Outlaw, Edmond - Nov 3, 2009 at 4:51 pm
okintx... So you're saying that we should replace a broken system with an even worse one, based largely on speculation, simply for the sake of change? That seems to be the same argument put forth by those pushing for government-run healthcare. Good luck with that.

And as I mentioned earlier, try explaining carbon dioxide theory and environmental consciousness to a minimum-wage earner in a bad economy, whose utility bills have just doubled.

okintx, I've read the opinions expressed by the sources you cited, and all I can say is that much has changed in the climate change/global warming debate since 2007. Do some reading, preferably from 2009. And to be clear, I'm not denying that global temperatures are or may be shifting... I just don't buy the rhetoric of a faction of scientists and politicians who stand to profit from the fallout of wide-eyed alarmism.

Close Buzz. However almost any 8th grader could tell you that all trees (in fact, all photosynthetic plants including algae) absorb atmospheric or dissolved carbon dioxide and put oxygen back. Plants and their ancestors are the reason we're all here - without them, animal life could not exist. Did you only get to 7th?
(It's possible that you're getting confused by plant respiration, in which plants do indeed produce small quantities of carbon dioxide, this applies to all plants at night - but that would be giving you a lot more credit than you deserve).

Outlaw, Edmond - Nov 3, 2009 at 4:01 pm
If the earth is cooling so much how come the ice caps keep melting? Or is that a hoax? You all who don't believe in global warming probably think the moon landing was a hoax as well. Personaly I'd like a real dabate on this issue between real scientists on both sides of the issue but we never get that. All we get is hot air from extremists trying to further their cause. Maybe that is what is melting the ice caps.
David, Norman - Nov 3, 2009 at 3:54 pm
stinker, I see no hero qualities in John Kerry. There will be many coming back from Iraq that have been shot at or shot, but that will not qualify them to lead the country, or even qualify as a hero. In Viet Nam, my buddy was offered a purple heart for jumping in a foxhole, while smoking a joint and coming under fire. He was kinda a hero in that he that he would not accept the purple heart becuse if he wasn't stoned, he wouldn't have hurt himself. I feel had it been John Kerry, he would have been sporting another metal!
BILLY, MUSTANG - Nov 3, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Well, Billy, seriously, he was in it and was shot at. Why buy all the crap that was put into the media by rich fat cats? The Swiftboaters were funded by the head Chesapeake--to the tune of tens of thousands. Think that guy ever served? It was pure politics, just to swindle the election.
stinkerpants, Oklahoma City - Nov 3, 2009 at 3:46 pm
I cannot believe what I’m reading (amazing how often I say that though when perusing the postings on this site). Where the hell are you idiots getting this stuff? Even China is making a push for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. There are simply no legitimate/reputable scientists still debating the basic facts of climate change. In February 2007, the thousands of scientific experts collectively known as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that there is greater than 90 percent likelihood that people are causing global warming. (IPCC, 2007). These latest findings only amplified what other scientific organizations were all saying: In a joint statement with 10 other National Academies of Science, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences said: "The scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to justify nations taking prompt action. It is vital that all nations identify cost-effective steps that they can take now, to contribute to substantial and long-term reduction in net global greenhouse gas emissions."—Joint Statement of Science Academies: Global Response to Climate Change, 2005. Finally, The American Geophysical Union, a respected organization comprising over 41,000 Earth and space scientists, wrote in its position on climate change that "natural influences cannot explain the rapid increase in global near-surface temperatures observed during the second half of the 20th century."
What’s next, evolution? Is that one a hoax too? Nevermind, I forgot who I was talking to…
okintx, Dallas - Nov 3, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Outlaw is climate change as real as "global warming" was a few months back? It was real enough a few months ago that someone as dumb as Algore got rich off of it, because like those that died in the sweat house, some treehuggers will buy anything!
BILLY, MUSTANG - Nov 3, 2009 at 3:44 pm
BILLY, notice that's how all the phony "illegal" savant's got? Blanket assertions without a shred of evidence, and accusations that others are "pontificating" (that must be his newest word of the day; bet he bought himself one of those them there Wm. F. Buckley Jr. word-a-day calendars just for NewsOK.com posts) when what we are *actually* doing is engaging in reasoned debate?

That's why it's very hard to take the little feline all that seriously whenever I encounter his - and that grubby whiner posts frequently - mincing prose.
Jason, Edmond - Nov 3, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Dang Jason, for a second, you really had me going. I thought Outlaw had written the post you just wrote, and thought he might have become logical. My bad, I should have known better after the first sentence.
BILLY, MUSTANG - Nov 3, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Pontificate all you like, the fact is that climate change is real. Like I said, the jury's out on the cause of climate change and until better evidence is found or other industrialized nations get on board, I don't support cap and trade legislation.
Outlaw, Edmond - Nov 3, 2009 at 3:37 pm
BILLY, They dropped the phrase "global warming" like a hot potato - no pun intended - the second it became obvious their climate models were frauds, and the earth has actually cooled every year since 1998.

In point of fact, "global wamring/climate change" is a myth, but a potent one: it has become a secular religion, where all evidence to the contrary of its founding assumption is either ignored or "clarified."

There is a lot riding on the belief of this myth, because Leftists/"progressives" are counting on using it to railroad through a social agenda they otherwise couldn't get past the American public.

It is one thing to say "if you don't enact my political program you are wrong," and quite another to say "if you don't enact my political program we're all going to die." Unfortunately, the scumbag Leftists, the mainstream liberal media, and the Democrat Party have all conspired to convince the majority of Americans that something that the actual evidence says isn't true/occurring actually is - a "flying spaghetti monster," indeed.

Inhofe's boycott of a committee hearing has nothing to do with wanting a complete analysis of the bill. The bill has been analyzed. The problem for Inhofe is that he does not like the conclusion. He's certainly not going to agree with any further analysis. If he doesn't like the bill, which he doesn't, he can vote against it. But he'll be on the losing side of any vote on climate change legislation, in committee and the full Senate. Boycotting a committee markup accomplishes nothing. They don’t need any Rs in the room. So good riddance.
Elliott, ARLINGTON - Nov 3, 2009 at 2:44 pm

The GOP, through their typical obstructionist tactics, also slowed down the extension of unemployment insurance benefits--even after the Democrats added billions in tax breaks for big business in a compromise amendment. Still, the GOP is fighting, requesting 30 more hours of debate, plus an intervening day. Meantime, more than 185,000 people have lost their unemployment benefits.

Paul, your straw man references to Sally Kern and other assorted Okie wingnuts are ridiculous in relation to the topic at hand.

Take a look at John's comments about the financial impact of bogus climate legislation, and think long and hard about how those rate increases will effect the financially disadvantaged sector of our population that so many liberal Dems profess concern for. My father, like John, has spent more than three decades at a major electrical utility provider and shares those same assertions.

Paul, if you're so disenchanted with this "dirthole state," there's plenty of available real estate in California or New York, thanks to the oppressive taxes and ridiculous budget shortfalls that have already affected the residents in those places.

Be sure to keep us updated with your new-found enlightenment and success.

Climate Change is a scare tactic used by the left in hopes to punish America for all the worlds ills by redistributing our wealth. It is being pushed hard by the dictators and tyrants that make up the UN and the radical socialist leftists here in the US. Bogus science that doesn't recognize that we've had warming and cooling since the beginning of time where cyclical change is the norm. Inhofe was easily elected for rightfully calling this spade a spade. Thank you, Jim!
Brock, Beaver - Nov 3, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Fellow Oklahomans, as one who has worked for a major Oklahoma utility company for 30 years, I can assure you with the strongest of words, that if this climate bill passes the Senate and is signed into law, your electric rates will skyrocket in price. It is possible that the average monthly electric bill could rise as much as $50.00 to $70.00 in a very short time. The east and west coast liberals must be stopped before this absolutely ludicrous bill becomes law.

Good for Inhofe. I'm in favor of any attempt to quell the ridiculous attempts by clueless Californians to bully free enterprise and independent thought completely out of existence. You halfwits that continue to champion the climate change hysteria propagated by the likes of Barbara Boxer, Al Gore and any number of clueless Hollywood celebrities would be well-served to research what actual climatologists have to say about "man-made global warming" and carbon dioxide emissions. Climate change is about as real as the tooth fairy, and that is why it is no longer called global warming. - Billy, Mustang

Not true Billy. There have been many studies that show that the climate does in fact change. I guarantee you that it will not be 70 degrees and sunny for the rest of time.

When I was a kid we used to get about a week or two of snow in the winter, now we get snow one day and an 75 degree day the next....or ice.

Climate change is about as real as the tooth fairy, and that is why it is no longer called global warming. It was just too easy to prove that was not true. Maybe if Obama would put health care to rest for awhile, MAYBE he could focus on doing what needs to be done in Afghanistan!
BILLY, MUSTANG - Nov 3, 2009 at 1:27 pm
I don't think there are too many people who can dispute that climate change is real. The dispute seems to be if humans are causing or if it's just a part of God's big plan. The Dems need to focus on Health Care reform and put this POS to bed.
