Caleb probable for Nebraska game
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops upgraded wide receiver Brandon Caleb to "probable” for Saturday’s game at Nebraska.

Caleb injured his ankle early on last weekend against Kansas State, causing him to miss the rest of the game.

But the ankle has progressed throughout the week in practice.

NFL future for Eldridge?
Senior Brody Eldridge has been Oklahoma’s most versatile player this season, and Stoops says starting at three positions — and being successful at all three — could help Eldridge play the game well after he leaves Norman.

"With a 53-man roster, they need guys who can play multiple spots. And no one can play more than he does,” Stoops said.

And he’s not the only one giving Eldridge glowing reviews.

"It’s pretty neat to see all the pro scouts coming and watching tape and just marveling at what he’s able to do. They see him at center, tight end and at guard, and I tell them go back a couple of years and watch him at fullback,” Stoops said.

McCoy a Bednarik Award semifinalist
Junior defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was among 16 players named as semifinalists for the Bednarik Award on Wednesday.

The award is given annually to college football’s best defensive player. Linebacker Teddy Lehman, who won the award in 2003, is the only Sooner to ever win the award.

McCoy ranks 15th nationally with 12 tackles for loss.

The list will be trimmed to three players on Nov. 23.

No Thorpe Award for Franks, Jackson
Oklahoma cornerbacks Dominique Franks and Brian Jackson have both been mentioned in passing as potential Thorpe Award candidates, but neither made the list of semifinalists released on Wednesday.

Three Big 12 defensive backs did, though.

Oklahoma State cornerback Perrish Cox made the list of 12 semifinalists for the annual award given to college football’s best defensive back, along with Kansas safety Darrell Stuckey and Texas safety Earl Thomas.

Ryan Broyles vs. Mark Clayton
Sophomore receiver Ryan Broyles has caught 10 touchdown passes, more than anyone in college football. Stoops said Broyles’ efforts are similar to another Sooner receiver now in the NFL, the Baltimore RavensMark Clayton.

"He’s very similar to Mark in his progression, ability to make big plays, runs after the catch. I think just naturally Mark, and it’s happening with Ryan, they’re just getting stronger,” Stoops said. "Ryan, he’s a young guy, but he should continue the same way.”

I knew Mark Clayton. Ryan Broyles is no Mark Clayton.

Broyles is tied for the most touchdowns check your stats guys. There is a guy by the name of Freddie Barns from BGSU who also has 10 this year.

There is a reason why Mark Clayton is the only receiver in the Stoops era to have a great NFL career. Broyles will be the next!

Most awards are a joke, anyway. Take the Heisman, as they rarely get it right. If they waited until after all games are played, they might come closer to getting it right. Hueple would have won the Heisman, instead of Weinke, if they only waited until all the games were played. On the flipside, Jason White (whom I think very highly of), would not have won his had they waited until all games are played (OU lost both games after White won the Heisman). I'm not a favor of such individual awards, anyway, but if they've got to do it, wait until all the games are played.

Franks hasn't earned inclusion for the Thorpe Award, but Jackson has. How he's not a semi-finalist but the guy from KU is is beyond me.

Broyles hangs out another year or so, and he'll have all Clayton's records.
