But despite the two schools’ proud tradition at the position, never before in the history of OU-Nebraska has the defensive tackle matchup commanded the spotlight like it will Saturday.

Sooner Gerald McCoy vs. Cornhusker Ndamukong Suh. Superstars who figure to go in the top five of next year’s NFL Draft.

"Their guy is a great player and obviously you know how we feel about Gerald,” said OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables. "They are two of the best defensive tackles to come through this league in a long time.”

Forget the league.

McCoy and Suh are two of the best defensive tackles to come through college football in some time.

Both are favorites to win Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Both are near locks to be named first-team All-American. Both will vie for the Lombardi and Outland trophies.

In fact, Saturday’s showdown could go a long way in determining all of that, despite the best efforts of both players attempting to downplay the matchup.

"I’m interested to see how well our offensive line does against him, but for me, my concern is their offensive line,” Suh told The Oklahoman in a phone interview. "I’m not really paying too much attention to the hype. We’re on two total opposite sides.”

McCoy tried to avoid taking any questions about the matchup by preemptively declaring he had nothing to say about Suh. But even McCoy acknowledged it’s not often the focus is on the defensive tackles.

"Well true, but it is about time we get some credit,” he said. "We work hard enough. But we don’t want credit. We just want to do what we can up front to help our team.”

McCoy and Suh have helped their teams profusely, but in different ways.

Suh relies more on his athleticism to separate from blockers before chasing down ball-carriers across the line of scrimmage, one reason why he leads the Huskers in tackles, which is rare for a defensive tackle.

McCoy often relies on his power to get penetration and disrupt opposing backfields.

Of course, Suh has plenty of power; and McCoy, athleticism.

"They’re both great players, but they play two different styles of football,” said OU center Ben Habern, who will be charged with the tall task of helping contain Suh. "Gerald is more of a penetrator trying to get through the line, while Suh is stand up, read the play, shed blocks and make tackles down the line of scrimmage.

"Either way, they’re both big-time NFL-status players.”

Brandon Carter from TT took Suh all game, one on one. Suh had four tackles (none for loss) and no sacks. Last year, Carter held him to three tackles...I guess Suh is getting better.

McCoy played the entire game against Miami and had 1/2 of a tackle...1/2!!!!!!!!!!!! One on one with Joel Figueroa.

I second Jeffery in Tampa's comments.

Winstrom and Neil Smith played DE not DT. OU boasts Kelly Gregg and Casillas to mention a few more OU DTs.

Rich Glover was a beast. He kept Tom Brahaney and company busy on a cold, wintery day in Nov of 71. He and LeRoy were the best.

He didn't have too. Because Nebraska has put far far more d-linemen in the league than most people realize, of course then again we are talking about COLLEGE football and NOT the pros, but hey lets not let that fact get in the way. BTW Glover is a college hall of famer(also named to multiple all century teams, and is considered one of the most dominant d-lineman to play in college in his or any other era), so is Bobby Brown(college and NFL), (will be inducted this year)Grant Wistrom, Neil Smith will likely be a NFL HOF, and there are more. I respect Oklahoma's history just enough to know that they have had some great ones over the years so I won't act ignorant or stupidd when they only list two of your all-time greats.

BTW Larry Jacobson won the outland and his career was shortened in the league due to a leg injury. But like I said this is about COLLEGE and NOT the pro's.

Had to go way back in time to find a couple of NU tackles.

Larry who? Rich who? I'm an NFL fan and I don't recognize those names. But Lee Roy Selmon? Yep. Hall of Fame. Tommy Harris? Pro-Bowl regular. Quit comparing apples and oranges.

Gerald McCoy is testimony to the virtue of spending four years in college, before going to the NFL. Nobody in the NFL has had more fun the past two years than Gerald McCoy has had on campus. He's one of the greatest kids to come through the program. While I hope and expect him to have a long and dominant NFL career, I am glad that he chose to fulfill the four years of his scholarship.

I'm really proud of who little "G.K." grew up to be. I hope he makes a lot of money in the future.

Nebraska's offensive line is having problems simular to our offensive line. But they aren't as talented. Look for us to win the battle of the lines, but it will be a long day for our O line. Look for Matt Clap to get more playing time to keep these animals off Landry.

Suh does appear to be quicker and stronger. He'll win the awards. But Nebraska does not have to focus on just one defensive player. OU has several and Beal is probably the guy they're focused on stopping more than McCoy.
Vince, Tuttle - Nov 5, 2009 at 7:34 am
Agreed James. Suh is a notch above Gerald IMHO. Question is - who has faced the tougher 0-lines this year as they compile their stats? We've only given up 5 sacks this year; if we give up two in the first quarter it's going to be a long day.

McCoy is really good... but Suh is an animal. Not sure if this is really a debate anywhere but Oklahoma City to be honest.
