Glance at the cover art of Bomshel, the new female country duo from Curb Records, and one might dismiss the pair as a flighty "girl power” act that’s high on glitz and low on substance.
But the debut record "Fight Like a Girl” is a mature offering from a new act, especially the first single and title track that’s become a theme song of sorts for the
Susan G. Komen foundation.
The tune touches on women stricken with breast cancer and how they persevere in the ultimate battle for their lives.
That type of passion steers the 11-track album that is rich in melodies and fiddle-driven numbers.
The vocalists in Bomshel are accomplished singers, and their harmonies turn even the subpar songs into a nice experience.
The duo, made up of Kristy O. and Kelley Shepard, gets cheeky on "Karma Is a Female Dog” and they tackle a cover of
No Doubt’s "Just a Girl” by fusing a twang and fiddle on the pop hit.
"Fight Like a Girl” might not be rife with radio hits but expect to see the album in heavy rotation among young, suburban mothers; the message being you can remain a strong, independent woman and still be sassy on the side.
