The Oklahoma relatives of a New York Army soldier injured in Thursday’s Fort Hood shootings said he is recovering after the attack.
Matthew Cooke, 30, was shot while trying to help a wounded comrade, his father Carl Cooke of Sidney, New York, said. “All I can tell you is that he’s making a good recovery,” said Jamie Casteel of Duncan. Casteel is Cooke’s mother in law. Casteel said Matthew Cooke’s wife, Sara, didn’t want more information released at this time. Matthew Cooke has been deployed once to Iraq. He's with the 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Brigade at Fort Hood. Carl Cooke said Matthew Cooke has two children, ages 1 and 4. Cook was one of 30 soldiers wounded when an armed gunman opened fire at the army post on Thursday. Thirteen soldiers were killed in the attack. The suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was on a ventilator and unconscious in a hospital after being shot four times during the rampage at the Army’s sprawling Fort Hood, post officials said.
