What is left for the Sooners to achieve?

Tress Way OU kicker

Oklahoma lost its miniscule hopes of a Big 12 title when it left Lincoln with a frustrating "3” illuminated on Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium scoreboard.

Now, it must reshuffle its goals once again.

"Win out and get to a bowl game,” said senior linebacker Ryan Reynolds, whose team still lacks its bowl-qualifying sixth victory. "Just win the remaining games.”

Oklahoma hosts Texas A&M next week before visiting Texas Tech, where the Sooners haven’t won since 2003.

OU closes the regular season Nov. 28 at home against Oklahoma State.

Did Tress Way lose his job as kicker?

Stoops said he considered bringing Jimmy Stevens off the bench Saturday when Way missed two field goals from beyond 40 yards and had another blocked.

A change could come this week. Stevens made 11 of 13 field goals before being benched but had not made a kick from beyond 40 yards. Both misses were from beyond 40. Stevens also missed an extra point in a 64-0 win over Idaho State.

If Stoops lacks confidence in Stevens, he could also look to junior kickoff specialist Matt Moreland, freshman Bryce Easley of Norman North or sophomore Patrick O’Hara.

What happened to the "good” Landry Jones?

Equal parts good defense, inaccuracy, and poor play by the offensive line and receivers.

"They’re not a big blitz team, but they caught us in a couple blitz deals to force him maybe to hurry some throws a few times,” Wilson said. "Protection, route-running. All parties needed to be better.”

Jones set a school record with six TD passes Sept. 19 against Tulsa. Now he owns a less desirable place in the OU record books: (5) most interceptions in a game.

Like any freshman, Jones has experienced his highs and lows. But Jones’ may be higher and lower than any quarterback to wear a Sooner uniform. If the Sooners want to be successful this season or in the future, Jones will have to find his median. If Jones wants to keep his job, that median must be closer to Tulsa than Nebraska.

Where is the team morale?

Wilson said he was happy with how the team responded from its first three losses, and didn’t expect them to respond differently this time.

"We’ve had a great deal of respect for the way our kids have been resilient, their practice habits, their attitude, their outlook. It’ll be interesting as we get ’em tomorrow,” he said.

After Saturday’s game, Reynolds and Jones both said there has been no tension between Oklahoma’s championship-caliber defense and struggling offense.

"We’ll see as we get to tomorrow where they’re at. But prior to coming out there last night, the attitude’s been pretty decent,” Wilson said.

Some of what I read here is true & I agree - but - some thoughts I just do not agree with. Yes, Steven Good was a highly rated player. In HS he was not allowed to go 100% because he hurt people. At OU he has not performed up to potential. Yes, Wilson calls plays sometimes that anyone in the stands can see coming. Yes, I think changes are in order. And, YES, JUST DO BETTER.!!! Now - the O-line.....yes, they have played REALLY poorly at times but remember - 2 starters left just before the season started & at least 4 others have been hurt. 2 more before & during the NU game. This has led to not being consistent & the penalties that drive us nuts. Only so much the coaches can do here especially with the depleted numbers. Yes, Landry has thrown interceptions but again not all his fault. In the NU game if the hold on our receiver by the NU defender is called - the "pic" that lead to their TD is gone. The receiver problem is just crazy. If they run good routes & JUST CATCH THE BALL we are probably undefeated even with all the other problems. Remember we are without our top QB & receiver due to injury as the season started in addition to the line problems. We should never be happy with 4 loses but all is not lost. We have been only 1 play away in every game. Think about this - take the starting QB, top receiver, 6 (count them - 6) linemen, a sometimes hurt #2 receiver, & a somewhat hurt top RB out of the lineup for Florida, Alabama & Texas & see what their season looks like. I think some of you folks need to rethink your attitude. I'm not happy with this season but I think we have lots of good things to be happy about.

Aaron, I think Steven Good was a 5-star (maybe 4-star) recruit and he simply gets abused out there. There is toooo much coaching and player talent out there for what is happening.... (Sooners have better talent then ever team we have lost to except Texas) so, I agree with Grant, Edmond... All y'all need to "Do Better"

It's simple, and it ought to be on a thousand t-shirts in Norman by Saturday:

"Do better."

Coaches need to coach better - they've shown incredible success. Now they need to do more with less by using creativity and instilling a little 'tude in the players. Especially the O-line. So what if you can't be as talented as the guys who left? Line up and knock someone's block off. Then, do it again. Come on coaches. You're culture started with guys who won a National Championship with a juco transfer QB and a bunch of players recruited by a guy who never coached a winning season at OU. Do better.

Players need to play better - you boys wear crimson for a reason. Now, prove it. Get out there and be a bad-a##. If you're gonna make a mistake, make it with flair. You are student athletes. We'll forgive you, but we've got to see real effort... and that includes mental effort. Do better.
Grant, Edmond - Nov 9, 2009 at 9:36 pm
I agree with a lot of opinions here, but when we talk about the offensive line, we need to look at recruiting. Are we getting the 4 or 5 star prospects that Texas and the other big boys do?? It seems it is all about getting top defensive players which is important. That has to change. We need to get these kind of guys around the position players on offense. These guys that are playing now are not the greatest talent in the world. The bottom line is that an elite program does not lose 4-5 games in one year to rebuild for 2 years from now. It seems that this team is repeating a cycle from 4 years ago only it is worse this time around.
Aaron, Parma - Nov 9, 2009 at 6:16 pm
It's ok. Now we know how all the other schools feel.
Shepard, Stonewall - Nov 9, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Sooner fans have had the luxury of being spoiled, year after year after year. Losing 4 is unheard of in Soonerville. To us, a mediocre year of 11-2 or 10-3 seems dismal at best. How important are stars like Sam, Jermaine, Brody, etc. probabaly would be undefeated if they had all been able to remain healthy. Could have won another Big 12 and probably lost another NC with those guys. We all know our line is just not that good this year, may have some problems next year also. Plus all those untimely injuries. Please, stop all the moaning. Our Sooners have given us lots to cheer about over the years and some things to cry about too. Teams today look about as even as they can. Look at Cincinnati (so much like OU & T-Tech was playing last year). Looks like they stole our playbood. Good team. Look at TCU, could probably beat Florida or Texas if the chips fell the right way. Thing is, our kids have never just given up in a game, until this one against Nebraska. Got very frustrated and didn't play as a team this time. You can all be disappointed, but get over it. Times will change for the better, like next year. Yes, Landry is not Sam and he had a terrible day. He looked like a freshman. But Sam had that outstanding O-line to play behind and he was truely a Heisman QB. I'm just glad he played for us. Maybe Landry, Drew, Blake, or ? will step up and bring us back into the glory days. Be patient, grumble a little, be proud of what our guys have done over the years and continue to cheer em on. Maybe Texas will play for NC this year, maybe they will win it all. But the Sooners will be back on top again thanks to Bob Stoops, great coaching, and excellent recruiting. Go Sooners!
william, Tulsa - Nov 9, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Brad, why do you think that next year will be any better? I expect it to get worse. Look at all the seniors (and possible juniors to the NFL) we lose this year.
james, Norman - Nov 9, 2009 at 12:45 pm
I would also like to see the no huddle go away. At least until we have experienced players on offense. It worked great last year with a veteran line, but not this year. I would also love to see them expand the playbook, we never take shots down field. Granted the receivers have been mostly horrible this year but if its not even a threat, no wonder we can't run the ball for crap. Enough with the swing passes!

Wilsons play calling makes any Defensive Coordinator look like a genius! Just how many plays are in his playbook 10? No wonder the Offense is frustrated! What happened to the element of suprise? Too vanilla, cummon whats the worse could happen at this point!Wilson always blames his players, but after the dust settles, he is the one that is ultimately responsible! Its time to fire his ass and start over!

Guys, really. Come on. There will never again be another hire, not by Joe C., that rivals Blake or Gibbs. There are SO many young coaches doing much more with less than Bob and Co. are doing here now. Stoops needs to make some changes, or he can be shown the door. This is the manifestation of years of underlying issues. We've seen glimpses of them and tried to ignore them or explain them away. They haven't gone away and now they've grown too big. Keep the same guys that created and fostered them? I think that would be silly.
Chris, Hesston - Nov 9, 2009 at 11:14 am
No doubt injuries have played a part of this disappointing season. But most teams have to deal with injuries and you don't want to rely on that battle cry for the end all excuse. You have to rely on your recruiting to backfill those players that get injured. Unfortunately those players have yet to play up to expected standards. That doesn't mean they never will. Hopefully, the players redshirting this year and the incoming true freshmen class will have enough talent for a quick rebound. You don't want to rely on the injury excuse. But in OU's case this year I believe it's a valid one.

The problem seems to be with the offensive line...Are they that bad physcially or are they poorly coached...I coached high school football in Texas for 45 years and I know a little about offensive line play and I think they are poorly versed in techinique and fundamentals...I know that zone blocking is a sound blocking scheme but those kids do not do a good job zone blocking so maybe there needs to be some adjustments in the schemes..People get into criticising the QB but it is hard to throw the ball with the offensive line in your lap...The receivers as a whole can not seperate from the D-backs...Are they that bad or are they poorly coached?...The O-Line and the D-Line are the foundation of a good offense and defense..That problem needs to be solved before the Sooners can return to the top...For those that want Stoops fired,(Rob) go back to what it was like before Stoops was hired...Blake, Gibbs, Schellenberger...Ring a bell...

The King didn't re-build, he re-loaded and he often said that. The King was a players coach. He knew his players and worked in practice himself. This led to knowing who had the heart and will to win and make plays. He knew how to get the Sooner Magic out on the field. Coach Stoops needs to take the King's approach. Get rid of Wilson's BS no-huddle scheme and move on to next year.
Steve, Ketchum - Nov 9, 2009 at 9:44 am
Answer to #5 : not for a while, believe me OU isn't dumb enough to get rid of Stoops. Answer to #6: Kelly is a great coach, and would deserve the money too. IF OU were to hire someone like that, I promise you they would be making 2-3 million

Hey Rob perhaps you should pull your head out of your arse. Stoops takesus to 4 national championship games and now we should fire him? Look at what all we lost from last year. Lost every wide receiver except Broyles. Lost the best TE in the country. Lost 4 of 5 offensive linemen. Lost our Heisman winning QB. We lost our entire freakin' offense! Yes Jones sucked last Saturday. And yes the line is average at best. Are the receivers inconsistent? Absolutely. Face it, this is a rebuilding year. Were there some poor plays called? You betcha! But was it Stoops fault that Jones was throwing the ball so poorly? And don't forget, if we had a field goal kicker who could perhaps...say....MAKE A FIELD GOAL, then we win the game! This season is hard to swallow but next year we'll be better.

Question #5: When will Stoops be fired? A: As soon as Joe C. gets his head out of his arse. Question #6: Who will replace Booby? A: Hopefully, Brian Kelly...and we won't have to pay him a $3 million bonus to NOT score touchdowns.

I there is a whole lot more than just 4 questions about OU football. Heck, we have more than that on our offensive line alone!
Patrick, Fayetteville - Nov 9, 2009 at 8:21 am
Way has a big leg, but lacks accuracy. I think he can get there over time. Foolish of the coaches to put him into a no win situation before he was ready. Stevens has a weak leg, but he is fairly accurate (confidence issues though). The problem is not being able to move the ball into good position for an attempt.

Surely Way will never set foot on the field again to attempt a FG.
