Bob Stoops says OU offense won't undergo any major changes
Published: November 10, 2009
NORMAN—Three days after the first touchdown-less performance of his coaching career at Oklahoma, coach Bob Stoops says the Sooner offense won’t be undergoing any major changes.
“In four days of practice, how much can you truly retool, ten games into it, with inexperienced guys?’ Stoops said. “Everybody was writing two weeks ago they were finally coming of age, guys were making plays and getting comfortable in the system. So, now, all of a sudden to scrap the system, I don’t believe is the answer.” Oklahoma outgained Nebraska 325-180, but five Landry Jones interceptions and three botched field goals kept the Sooners in the single digits for the first time since a 35-7 loss to Kansas State in the 2003 Big 12 Championship. “We ran the ball in a lot of instances well, we protected the quarterback well,” said Stoops, whose team surrendered two sacks. Running backs Demarco Murray and Chris Brown combined for 97 yards on 26 carries, an average of 3.73 yards per carry. “You try and modify and makes some adjustments to a degree, which we always do, and we work with it.” On why 40 percent of offensive linemen have left the program since 2005: It was a number of reasons. Some guys don’t want to go to class. They don’t want to work out. They want to set their own schedule. And that generally, with a team of 100 guys, doesn’t set real well. So, eventually they’re dismissed. Okay, you don’t want to do it, well, then don’t do it. You need to go somewhere else. Whether they choose they don’t want to do it, or we choose for them, alright, the way you’re doing things, it’s not going to work anymore. On recruiting different linemen: We don’t have a full class yet, we’ve got a lot more to sign. We’re still recruiting. Hopefully, there’s a bunch of young linemen listening to our need for linemen. (Recruiting junior college linemen) is a priority, and we’re recruiting them. On what he would have done had Oklahoma scored on it’s final drive against Nebraska: I was thinking of going for two. I had already talked to the coaches about it. We hadn’t kicked field goals well already, and sometimes you get in those overtime games, the way both of our defenses were playing, you would think that we would force a bunch of field goals. And at that point, probably justifiably, I didn’t feel great about getting into a field goal-kicking contest. And felt we had a chance to put it on that play instead of kicking field goals.

Bob needs to understand that the offense that he has been running since 2003, does not work. It is too predictable and without superior talent in all positions, is easily beatable. In 1999 - 2002/3, we were 2 to 3 deep in most positions. Now, we cannot field 22 players without fear of injury and the like. Zone blocking does not work if you want to have a strong running attack. Without a dominating running attack, the passing attack falters. No pure passing team has ever won the NCS, even Florida. (They did when they added a very strong running attack.) It is great to have a team that can pass for 300-400 yards a game but the teams with 300-400 yards of rushing in the end, win championships! I am not advocating a return to the WB or the Flexbone but at the same time, going to the spread-option makes sense starting next year. You have a stable of outstanding RBs.use them in tandem!! Find a QB who can pass and run and receivers that can catch and run...we are back into it. However, this means that Kevin Wilson and much of the staff has to go. Bring in an NFL-caliber line coach. Let Josh H help plan the games. Find an innovative offensive coordinator. In other words Stoops, fix it or move on.
OU fan..it's going to be a loooooooong Winter

3 of 6 didnt make it 2 years in the 2005 class: Ben Barrasi, Brandon Keith, and Jesse White.
3 of 7 didn't make it in the 2006 class: Curtics Bailey, Chase Beeler, and Chad Roark.
3 of 5 didn't make it from the 2007 class: Jason Hannan, Alex Williams, and Kody Cooke. What's interesting here is one transfered after the 2008 season, 1 during spring practice, and one after spring practice. All knowing starting positions were to be had.
1 out of 3 from 2008 didnt even make it to the season. Britt Mitchell enrolled early, went through spring practice, said he was going into the Marines then enrolled at UTEP.
All 4 of 2009 recruits are still on the roster, but 2 have not played at all, even with all the issues. How much does anyone want to bet, they're gone after this season. This is where Stoops is adding raw numbers to tilt the facts.
Leave off 2009 and you get 50% of the recruits are leaving.
The real issue is why all these recruits are leaving the program and I'm not buying what he said. The issue is Patton and Wilson. Lots of rumors surround the program concerning the linemen that left. Just another example of poor coaching on their part. Can't even keep players in the program.
STOOPS MAKE THE DECISION THAT NEEDS TO BE MADE. ITS WAY PAST TIME.
Wake up, Landry had a really bad game. But, he has proven that he has the ability to get it done.
LAST YEAR'S SCHEME IS NOT WORKING FOR THIS YEAR'S MIX OF PLAYERS. The talent level of the lineman is not at the same high level it was at last year. Inject some misdirection and counter plays, let Landry Jones roll out more. I would rather see changes made than to see this continual barrage of poor performance out of the offense when they come up against a strong defense. Inflexibility to make changes when they are needed is not going to help this team.
For those of you idiots who think you can call better plays, I'm sure you would be welcome in the pressbox next Sat. (NOT) None of you have the courage or the intelligence.
