Bob Stoops says OU offense won't undergo any major changes

NORMAN—Three days after the first touchdown-less performance of his coaching career at Oklahoma, coach Bob Stoops says the Sooner offense won’t be undergoing any major changes.

“In four days of practice, how much can you truly retool, ten games into it, with inexperienced guys?’ Stoops said. “Everybody was writing two weeks ago they were finally coming of age, guys were making plays and getting comfortable in the system. So, now, all of a sudden to scrap the system, I don’t believe is the answer.” Oklahoma outgained Nebraska 325-180, but five Landry Jones interceptions and three botched field goals kept the Sooners in the single digits for the first time since a 35-7 loss to Kansas State in the 2003 Big 12 Championship.

“We ran the ball in a lot of instances well, we protected the quarterback well,” said Stoops, whose team surrendered two sacks. Running backs Demarco Murray and Chris Brown combined for 97 yards on 26 carries, an average of 3.73 yards per carry. “You try and modify and makes some adjustments to a degree, which we always do, and we work with it.”

On why 40 percent of offensive linemen have left the program since 2005:

It was a number of reasons. Some guys don’t want to go to class. They don’t want to work out. They want to set their own schedule. And that generally, with a team of 100 guys, doesn’t set real well. So, eventually they’re dismissed. Okay, you don’t want to do it, well, then don’t do it. You need to go somewhere else. Whether they choose they don’t want to do it, or we choose for them, alright, the way you’re doing things, it’s not going to work anymore.

On recruiting different linemen:

We don’t have a full class yet, we’ve got a lot more to sign. We’re still recruiting. Hopefully, there’s a bunch of young linemen listening to our need for linemen. (Recruiting junior college linemen) is a priority, and we’re recruiting them.

On what he would have done had Oklahoma scored on it’s final drive against Nebraska:

I was thinking of going for two. I had already talked to the coaches about it. We hadn’t kicked field goals well already, and sometimes you get in those overtime games, the way both of our defenses were playing, you would think that we would force a bunch of field goals. And at that point, probably justifiably, I didn’t feel great about getting into a field goal-kicking contest. And felt we had a chance to put it on that play instead of kicking field goals.

Not only will OU not go to a bowl this year, but I think they'll be lucky to make 6-6.
KEITH, North Charleston - Nov 13, 2009 at 9:47 am
Hopefully, after this year's experience, Stoops will start playing more backups in the future and stop leaving starters in for the whole game.
james, Norman - Nov 11, 2009 at 2:48 pm
I hate to say it but Bob Stoops is correct in this case. There is not much that can be done at this point with three games to go. All the staff can do is continue to work with the players, tinker, fill the holes, hold on, and pray for the best (an 8-4 season instead of a 5-7). However, there are bigger issues here. Why is the cupboard so bare? Why aren't the players better developed? Etc.
Bob needs to understand that the offense that he has been running since 2003, does not work. It is too predictable and without superior talent in all positions, is easily beatable. In 1999 - 2002/3, we were 2 to 3 deep in most positions. Now, we cannot field 22 players without fear of injury and the like. Zone blocking does not work if you want to have a strong running attack. Without a dominating running attack, the passing attack falters. No pure passing team has ever won the NCS, even Florida. (They did when they added a very strong running attack.) It is great to have a team that can pass for 300-400 yards a game but the teams with 300-400 yards of rushing in the end, win championships! I am not advocating a return to the WB or the Flexbone but at the same time, going to the spread-option makes sense starting next year. You have a stable of outstanding RBs.use them in tandem!! Find a QB who can pass and run and receivers that can catch and run...we are back into it. However, this means that Kevin Wilson and much of the staff has to go. Bring in an NFL-caliber line coach. Let Josh H help plan the games. Find an innovative offensive coordinator. In other words Stoops, fix it or move on.
David, Grimes - Nov 11, 2009 at 8:33 am
Exactly, Michael. Stoops has put together a monster program that's dominating the Big 12. Many teams would love to have our worst year, and few have ever had even our average year. This is a tough season by OU standards but we'll be OK.

Forget all this junk...let the season play out...it was doomed from the minute Bradford and Gresham went down and became apparent these linemen didn't live up to expectations, nor wide receivers for the most part. It happens. That's why they play the game...you can overanalyze every game the rest of the way, shoulda done this..shoulda done that...all irrelavant unless they're at full strength across the board. Betcha that's Castiglione's point of view. Wait till next year, they'll be back ...now they know the need for O linemen and playmakers (not to mention the whispers of a great QB from Wichita, KS) this year will be a tough memory that ultimately will be remembered for OU's players out and sub standard O lineman. That will be corrected.

I love the Sooners but I can't stand our ignorant fans. Last year it was fire Venables and Wilson is the greatest coordinator of all times. Now, one year after directing one of the most productive offenses of all time, it's time to fire Wilson. Here's the deal - Jermaine out for the season, Bradford out for the season, Murray persistent injuries, Broyles out for a couple of games, graduated four multi-year starters off of the line, graduated Joaquin and Manuel, WR's have a case of the drops, underachieving offensive line, English out for the season, Eldridge out for the season, difficult schedule, etc. How good would Texas be without McCoy and Shipley, four new offensive linemen, and OU's schedule? It sucks that we are 5 and 4. However, we are one play away in each game from being 9 and 0. Win out, win a bowl game, recruit like crazy, work hard in the spring and summer, then come out and make a statement next fall. One more thing, any time you want to complain about Stoops, Wilson, Long, Mangino, Venables, etc., remember Gibbs, Schnellenberger, and Blake!
Michael, Keller - Nov 10, 2009 at 10:06 pm
Kevin Wilson needs to go....Landry Jones is a good quarterback. Our defense doesn't deserve this offense. I understand graduating an incredible offensive line, but come on, lots of schools do that. I remain an avid Sooner fan! Let's get an offensive coordinator.
Cathy, Wimberley - Nov 10, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Good to see Bobaloo doesn't see any problems...lmao OU is a mediocre football team at best that isn't even bowl eligible yet...yikes!!!

OU fan..it's going to be a loooooooong Winter
Jolly, Edmond - Nov 10, 2009 at 9:40 pm
yeah...I wouldn't change anything either....it's been working SO WELL this year!
Shane, Cushing - Nov 10, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Stoops is out of his ever-loving mind! Our offense needs a complete overhaul. Defense could use a little too.
Cracka, OKC - Nov 10, 2009 at 9:32 pm
New title should say: "Bob Stoops says OU offense will continue to blow goat"
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 10, 2009 at 8:10 pm
According to an article in today's USA Today, Stoops earns $4.3 million a year. There are only two other NCAA coaches that earn $4 million and above: Carroll ($4.4) and Meyer ($4.). The latter two have won or shared four out of the last six National Championships.

Liars Figure and figures lie. Stoops twisted the facts on recruits leaving the program. The 40% figure counts all 4 2009 recruits. The real questionis why 10 out of 21 OL recruits didnt make it to 2 years in the program from 2005 to 2009.

3 of 6 didnt make it 2 years in the 2005 class: Ben Barrasi, Brandon Keith, and Jesse White.

3 of 7 didn't make it in the 2006 class: Curtics Bailey, Chase Beeler, and Chad Roark.

3 of 5 didn't make it from the 2007 class: Jason Hannan, Alex Williams, and Kody Cooke. What's interesting here is one transfered after the 2008 season, 1 during spring practice, and one after spring practice. All knowing starting positions were to be had.

1 out of 3 from 2008 didnt even make it to the season. Britt Mitchell enrolled early, went through spring practice, said he was going into the Marines then enrolled at UTEP.

All 4 of 2009 recruits are still on the roster, but 2 have not played at all, even with all the issues. How much does anyone want to bet, they're gone after this season. This is where Stoops is adding raw numbers to tilt the facts.

Leave off 2009 and you get 50% of the recruits are leaving.

The real issue is why all these recruits are leaving the program and I'm not buying what he said. The issue is Patton and Wilson. Lots of rumors surround the program concerning the linemen that left. Just another example of poor coaching on their part. Can't even keep players in the program.

STOOPS MAKE THE DECISION THAT NEEDS TO BE MADE. ITS WAY PAST TIME.
Robert, Dallas - Nov 10, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Don't you find it amazing that a "horrible", "mediorcre" and "bad" quarterback is the only two time BigXII Offensive Player of the Week?

Wake up, Landry had a really bad game. But, he has proven that he has the ability to get it done.

at 4 million, you can't EVER have a bad year...well, I guess you can.

Kevin in Marion, Indiana is right on. Randy in Oklahoma City is obviously an Aggie.
Michael, Norman - Nov 10, 2009 at 5:53 pm
WTF: 3.66 MILLION/yr? For what? FIRE BOB STOOPS
Randy, Oklahoma City - Nov 10, 2009 at 5:43 pm
I am not jumping off a bandwagon I have been on for 45 years. What concerns me is the trend that this team has demonstrated time and time again when it plays another team with a strong defense. The offense becomes inept and there is never an attempt to try to inject some creativity into the thinking of scheming the offense. IF YOUR OFFENSE CAN'T GET THE BALL TO THE END ZONE, THE STATISTICS MEAN ZILCH!
LAST YEAR'S SCHEME IS NOT WORKING FOR THIS YEAR'S MIX OF PLAYERS. The talent level of the lineman is not at the same high level it was at last year. Inject some misdirection and counter plays, let Landry Jones roll out more. I would rather see changes made than to see this continual barrage of poor performance out of the offense when they come up against a strong defense. Inflexibility to make changes when they are needed is not going to help this team.
jerry, Hephzibah - Nov 10, 2009 at 5:38 pm
I know I'm not a coach but I'm not an idiot when it comes to football, I played it and watched it for years. I also have season tickets so I pay my dues. With that I feel like I can praise good jobs and criticize. This years team for whatever reason lacks passion and drive to play. The play calling has been very poor. This is also the assessment from a lot of the experts. I don't know the answers, maybe Stoops needs to make some changes, get some fresh minds in his staff. I didn't figure he would change right now though, Stoops is to stubborn and proud. But I have faith he'll make the right decisions after this season.

it was another poorly coached ballgame. Yeah the players sucked it up a little but in reality the coaches aren't calling the right plays. Poor coaching on the offensive side of the ball.

I was able to get my season tickets during the Blake years. It was Awesome. They had someone set up at a card table like a high school game selling tix during the spring game. While the wagon slows (now Jarvis is out) and more quitters jump off I'm bound to get an upgrade... Can't wait!
Britton, Edmond - Nov 10, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Hi hope Mark is kidding. Jones had one bad game and all of a sudden he is horrible. Outside of Broyles, the WR's are not getting separation. Additionally, NU did a good job of getting a hand up on the line to bat down some balls. Over the course of the game, Landry overcompensated and starting throwing too high and hence the five TO's. It all begins up front on both sides of the ball. OL was a known weak point prior to the season and with the recent injuries and other young guys struggling it has been disastrous. Of the coaches, Patten is fair game. His OL have struggled with stupid penalties the last several years. In the past, we were good enough elsewhere to compensate. This year, not good enough elsewhere to compensate.
Craig, Bixby - Nov 10, 2009 at 5:01 pm
It's only football - it's not like it's the most importsnt thing in the universe. OU is having a bad year - lots of injuries, rookie players and a ot of other issues. They'll regroup and be back stronger next year - it's hard to keep a team like OU down for long.
stephen, Elk City - Nov 10, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Kevin, just so you know, there are OU fans who feel exactly like you do. Not all of us are complete idiots. I just wanted to let you know, because if you were to judge based on these boards, you'd think we're all insane!! YOU NAILED IT..
Stretch, Ada - Nov 10, 2009 at 4:57 pm
I agree.....either you posters stay with OU or go root for somebody else. But don't go on rambling like you know what the problem is. You don't have A CLUE! Its not black-n-white....there is a lot of gray that you can't manipulate. (like attitude, character, live-ball decisions, fortitude) That comes from within. I think Stoops addressed much of the offensive line problems perfectly. I don't perceive him as stubborn...rather he is self-confident and understands a lot more than every fan and sportwriter out there who thinks it's their God-given right to criticize. Wish all those linemen who've left over the years had the character of a Brody Eldridge.
For those of you idiots who think you can call better plays, I'm sure you would be welcome in the pressbox next Sat. (NOT) None of you have the courage or the intelligence.
