$1.64 million in grants awarded to Oklahoma nonprofits

“Our trustees and staff are proud of the work being done by the nonprofit sector in our state,” foundation Executive Director Kim Henry said in a news release. “We are happy to fund nonprofits across the state, especially in rural areas where resources are more limited.

“Our focus in 2012 continues to be on supporting organization's programs and services benefiting the most vulnerable Oklahomans.”

Since its creation in 1961, Sarkeys has awarded more than $75 million in grants for education, social services, arts, environmental projects and health care and medical research.

Nonprofits can seek grants in one of two categories: less than $10,000 or more than $10,000. In order to spread funds as widely as possible, the Foundation has capped awards at $50,000.

The next grant application deadline is Aug. 1.

• $50,000 to Domestic Violence Intervention Services Inc., Tulsa, for operating expenses for the DVIS/Call Rape Emergency Shelter.

$50,000 to the Great Expectations Foundation, Tahlequah, for Great Expectations for Rural Schools.

$50,000 to the Hearts for Hearing Foundation, Oklahoma City, for Tapping into Tele-Practice.

$50,000 to the Homeless Alliance, Oklahoma City, for increasing the WestTown Resource Center's capacity to end family homelessness.

$50,000 to Infant Crisis Services, Oklahoma City, for formula, food and diapers for the Needy Babies and Toddlers Project.

$50,000 to the Infant Parent Intervention Center, Oklahoma City, for the Canadian County Expansion Project.

$50,000 to Iron Gate At Trinity Inc., Tulsa, for feeding the hungry of Tulsa.

$50,000 to the Oklahoma Dental Foundation for Research and Education, Oklahoma City, for its Mobile Dental Program for women leaving prison.

$50,000 to the Oklahoma Blood Institute, Oklahoma City, for the Oklahoma Public Umbilical Cord Blood Bank.
