For the 11th year, comic book shops and participating locations around the world will give away comics to customers and visitors.
Saturday marks the 11th celebration of Free Comic Book Day. Characters such as Spider-Man, The Avengers, Batman, The Simpsons and Charlie Brown star in special comics, sold at low cost to stores, to be given away free on this special day.
Free Comic Book Day was created by Concord, Calif., comic book retailer Joe Field, owner of Flying Colors Comics and Other Cool Stuff.
Retailers have given away more than 25 million comics since the first giveaway in 2002.
A dozen stores in the Oklahoma City area are participating.
“With more than 3.5 million comics available worldwide for the giveaway on Free Comic Book Day 2012, this is the perfect opportunity to experience all the great stuff going on in comics at your locally owned independent comic book specialty store,” Field said in a news release.
Free Comic Book Day 2012 will be celebrated in 40 countries around the world this year. Field estimated between 300,000 to 500,000 people visit comic shops each year on Free Comic Book Day.
Field is also the president of ComicsPRO, the direct-market trade organization for comic shops. More information about the organization is available at www.comicspro.org.
This year, many of the characters starring in summer films also will star in Free Comic Book Day offerings. The Avengers, starring in this weekend's “Marvel's The Avengers,” are featured in “Avengers: Age of Ultron Point One,” by Brian Michael Bendis and Bryan Hitch. Another movie star from the pages of Marvel Comics, Spider-Man, is featured in the “Spider-Man Season One” preview edition, available at some Free Comic Book Day locations.
Batman comes back to the movies this summer in “The Dark Knight Rises,” and he's involved in DC Comics' “The New 52 Special Edition,” which will also star Superman and Wonder Woman. A preview of the new series “Batman Incorporated” is also included in the issue.
If superheroes aren't your thing, other comics available will feature Yo Gabba Gabba, Star Wars, The Transformers, Mega Man, the Peanuts characters and more.
