13 for '13 series: LB Shaun Lewis comes in at No. 11 on list of Oklahoma State's most important players for 2013

Continuing our series looking at Oklahoma State’s most important players for the 2013 season:

No. 11: Shaun Lewis

It feels like Lewis is one of those players who’s been in Stillwater forever, doesn’t it?

The outside linebacker became an immediate impact player in 2010, when he was named a Freshman All-American. Since then, he’s been a mainstay on the Cowboy defense, earning AP second-team All-Big 12 honors as a junior in 2012.

And expectations are high for Lewis in 2013, as he was named to the preseason All-Big 12 team and is on the watch list for the Bronco Nagurski Award given to the nation’s top defensive player.

Lewis has become known for his ability to make a variety of plays all over the field. He can run players down in the backfield and provide the big hit on the quarterback while coming on the blitz. He can make plays in space against both the run and the pass. And he has a nose for the football.

That versatility essentially can be illustrated by one number — five. Over Lewis’ career, he has five sacks, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, five interceptions and five pass breakups. A goofy coincidence, obviously, and a number Lewis hopes to build on in each of those categories in 2013. It will be interesting to monitor how the Cowboys’ plan to play a more aggressive defense impacts the linebacking corps, and Lewis, in particular, based on his playmaking ability.

OSU’s defense has a solid group of seniors to serve as leaders in 2013. Lewis is certainly expected to be one of them.

Here’s our countdown so far:
13. Jake Jenkins, center
12. J.W. Walsh, quarterback
11. Shaun Lewis, linebacker
