— An eighth-grader at Guthrie Junior High drowned Monday while swimming at Liberty Lake, authorities said.

The body of Dalton Jeremy Patterson, 14, has been taken to the state medical examiner's office for autopsy, a spokeswoman said.

His body was recovered about 8 p.m. Monday after he went under water while swimming toward the middle of the lake with a group of other teenagers, police said.

“We made a call to our counselors across the district and we have extra counselors on site today to meet with students and we will continue with that,” Guthrie schools Superintendent Mike Simpson said Tuesday.

Police say this is the first drowning at Liberty Lake in at least 15 years.

Liberty Lake is open for use from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Children younger than 13 must be supervised by an adult, according to the city of Guthrie's website.
