150 turkeys to be served at annual Edmond dinner

EDMOND — Hundreds of pounds of potatoes, ham, stuffing, vegetables and 150 turkeys have been prepared for the Edmond Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Nigh University Center ballroom on the University of Central Oklahoma campus.

Organizers expect to feed about 2,000 people. Preparations for the event began Monday at several churches.

Committee member Biruta Harris said about the same number were fed at the university last year with another 400 home deliveries and takeouts served. What food is left over will be given to local homeless shelters, she said.

She said 518 volunteers helped in the dinner preparations, setup and serving.

This is the 28th annual community dinner.

One of the event organizers, Mike Laska, recalls the original dinner started when Frank and Pat Paradise of Edmond invited about 30 friends to join them for Thanksgiving dinner. Each year the number of guests grew until it became a community event, Laska said.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is the main host for this year’s dinner with First United Methodist Church serving as junior host.

The four core churches involved in the dinner are First Presbyterian, New Covenant United Methodist, Southern Hills Christian Church and First Christian Church of Edmond.
