SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities found two backpackers who were a day overdue in the backcountry near Zion National Park, and they were flown by a helicopter to Kanab.
The 40- and 51-year-old women set off Thursday for the East Fork of the Virgin River and failed to reappear Sunday as planned at Checkerboard Mesa.
Kane County's chief sheriff's deputy, Tracy Glover, says the hikers rationed their food and avoided flash floods in canyons around Zion National Park.
Glover says the women had trouble following their backcountry route.
Both hikers are reportedly from Salt Lake City.
