While America was bracing for a British Invasion of pop music, Frank Hightower was looking to update the tearoom in the downtown building that bore his family name.

Young chef John Bennett was fresh from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park , N.Y., where he befriended a couple of culinary icons-to-be — namely, James Beard and Julia Child .
