Two Oklahoma senators plan to spend the night outside the state Capitol to draw attention to cuts to senior nutrition programs due to a deepening state budget shortfall.

Democratic Sens. Kenneth Corn of Poteau and Tom Ivester of Elk City plan to camp outside the Capitol Tuesday night.

The senators are protesting a decision by the Commission for Human Services to cut $7.4 million from a program that provides meals to seniors in response to declining state revenues.

Corn, a candidate for lieutenant governor, is calling for a special session to restore the funding cuts. He says seniors citizens should be a priority in state government and should not be shut out in the cold.

Seniors plan to rally at the Capitol on Wednesday to ask lawmakers to restore funding for the programs.

Cletus see Larry Jones. I think Corn is a decent man and rep unless the corporations have made him into a whore. I hope not. We have university presidents living in luxury walking the streets so to speak of the big House wanting more money but we wont take care of those in need. I WAS a big David Boren fan but its pretty obvious he and Burnsey are one of the same ilk. What I have heard and I emphasize heard is that a former governor of this state is wanting to move people to nursing homes. The programs described above are designed to keep people out of the nursing home and to save the taxpayers money. This former governor apparently has well lets say corporate interest in the nursing home business just like his wife had interest in corrections. These are elitist, evil, eugenic psychopaths that need to be stopped. They have backed our current president because he is the perfect one to bring in about new order. Stay away from these evil bastards. Good for the reps to at least make an effort to stand up for what is good about our state and our country as there isnt much else good going on. Effort recognized.

It's so pleasant this evening...even the homeless are shedding their overcoats and putting on Moon-tan oil.

Why not have the "preachers" give up their gold and silver and really help give back to the people. We talk about what churchs can and cannot do, yet many preachers (especially non-denominational) are nothing more than cash whores living on the fear of the believers.

Hanging out in front of a closed building overnight is not "doing something" about the issue. Granted, of all the programs to cut funds for, it may not have been the best one; but what will this activity do to change it? Nada.

Or, better yet, have churches rotate days for preparing food for the seniors in their areas\, and take it to the community centers. All churches have kitchens, and it is Godly (in all religions) to donate money and time for the needy.

While I do support local and faith based charities, the amount of "need" far far exceed the avaliability of those organizations to provide services. Most of the charity organizations are themselves running low on resources, funding, food, and say as much.
15% of all people in Oklahoma are now on food stamps, 25% of all children in Oklahoma are now on food stamps. Food Stamps at least is paid for 100% by the federal government, but administered by DHS. The elderly program in question was 100% state funded.
There are disconnects in our society between what folks might want to idealize as the ideal solution to such situations, such as local volunteers, vs. the reality of the sheer numbers of people and the cost of such programs-
I would agree volunteers have the potential to be provide a more compassionate delivery of these servcies, but they are unable to operate at the size, scale, and scope that this program had been functioning at.
Overall the two politicians are indeed grandstanding for P.R. though... their act alone will not do anything to change the state's overall economic situation.

Ok, Linda and Chris - you need to sleep outside more. Maybe some fresh air will clear your brains. Are you kidding? I dare you to find ONE senior citizen that is DEPENDING on the government for either food *or* "social contact". We don't need government to help these people - we need churches. all churches. Mobile Meals, for instance, is one of the largest volunteer organizations in the state. And the kindness and hope that VOLUNTEERS show people in need is more than anything Camp Bozo can do.

At least they are doing something! Nobody else will. The low income seniors are always the first to feel the funding cuts. Most of the clowns at the Capitol only care about restrictions on abortion, putting the Ten Commandments on state property, and hating gays.

This is silly. Not only is it ineffective, they've picked the most pleasant weather conditions we've had all year. As if we didn't need more reasons to be cynical about politicians.

You know, it seems like for these seniors who depend on these programs for their hot meal of the day, it's not only raining, it's pouring. Quite often going to the nutrition centers is also the only social contact they have. Why is there no talk about dipping into the rainy day fund to provide food for these folks? It's akin to my not wanting to touch my precious savings while my grandma and grandpa starve to death. Something's not right there. Oh, silly me. It's government. The funding for this must come from a "different pot of money," so the rainy day fund can't be tapped for it.

Adam, that sounds great! Oh, don't you know they'll have capital police all around them to protect them from the real homeless.
Boomer, Washington - Nov 3, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Finally, some chutzpah at work. Maybe they'll camp out in a sweat lodge, too. Stoke them fires! Haul water. Beg for money. Panhandle for food.

Lets take fog horns & super soakers to the capital tonight to make sure they don't sleep on the job.

Interesting that this story was juxtaposed with an ad for electric golf carts that would allegedly only cost $70 after state and federal tax cuts...

I'm doing what will be more productive I'm sure than this silly stunt. Let's call local senior centers and see what we can do to help. If you know a senior who is home bound or is otherwise coming up short, make certain he or she has a hot meal today,. Then senators Corn and Ivester won't have to redistribute their fellow Oklahomans' money.
