Two south Oklahoma City elementary schools are the next in line for consolidation into one facility, as the district nears the final years of the $700 million MAPS for Kids plan.

The plan, which was approved by voters more than 10 years ago, calls for Columbus Elementary, 2402 S Pennsylvania, and Westwood Elementary, 1701 Exchange, to close.

Most of the students from those schools will attend a new elementary school housed in a renovated middle school.

A roughly $6 million renovation will transform Jackson Middle School into a modern space for prekindergarten through sixth-grade students.

The consolidation could occur as early as the 2012-13 school year, but the actual date depends on when the renovations of Jackson Middle School are completed, Tierney Tinnin, spokeswoman for Oklahoma City Public Schools, wrote in an email.

Seventh- and eighth-grade students who would attend Jackson Middle School, 2601 S Villa, will be assigned to either Roosevelt or Webster middle schools depending on their attendance zones, Tinnin wrote.

The district's plan, which is being phased in over time, is for most elementary schools to include sixth-grade students.

Center given

— The American Electric Power Foundation is giving $250,000 to Oklahoma State University-Tulsa to buy new equipment for researchers in the Helmerich Research Center. The gift was given on behalf of Public Service Company of Oklahoma. The money will help provide state-of-the-art equipment for student lab use and faculty research. The gift is the first private donation to support the Helmerich Research Center since Walter and Peggy Helmerich of Tulsa donated $9 million when it was built. OSU-Tulsa will name a 45-seat seminar room the “Public Service Company of Oklahoma Seminar Room” in honor of the gift.
