BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Two vaccines that are currently mandatory for North Dakota students starting middle school will be required for all pupils entering seventh grade this fall.

The state's Department of Health announced the change on Thursday. Incoming seventh-graders will now have to receive the Tdap and meningococcal conjugate vaccines.

Amy Schwartz is the health department's immunization surveillance coordinator. She says not all communities interpret middle school the same way and the move will standardize immunization requirements among students.

The department is urging parents to make sure their child's immunizations are up to date before schools starts this fall.
