How other coaches hired at the same time OSU promoted Mike Gundy have fared:
Team, 2004 Coach, W-L, 2005 Coach, W-L
BYU, Gary Crowton, 5-6, Bronco Mendenhall, 6-6
How it turned out: Still with the Cougars, Mendenhall has turned around the program, going 70-27.
Florida, Ron Zook, 7-5, Urban Meyer, 9-3
How it turned out: Meyer rescued the program, going 65-15 and winning two national titles in six seasons.
LSU, Nick Saban, 9-3, Les Miles, 11-2
How it turned out: Miles has kept the program rolling, going 81-19, winning one national championship game and losing another.
New Mexico St., Tony Samuel, 5-6, Hal Mumme, 0-12
How it turned out: No place to win, Mumme found his spread offense couldn't change things, going 11-38 in four years. He's now at Division III McMurry.
Notre Dame, Ty Willingham, 6-6, Charlie Weis, 9-3
How it turned out: Weis started strong in South Bend, winning nine and 10 games in his first two seasons, but was gone after Year 5 with a 35-27 mark. He's now at KU.
Pittsburgh, Walt Harris, 8-4, Dave Wannstedt, 4-7
How it turned out: The former OSU assistant went 42-31 in six seasons at Pitt — not good enough. He's now the defensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills.
South Carolina, Lou Holtz, 6-5, Steve Spurrier, 7-5
How it turned out: After flaming out with the Washington Redskins, Spurrier has done a solid job in charge of the Gamecocks, currently at 61-36.
Syracuse, Paul Pasqualoni, 6-6, Greg Robinson, 1-10
How it turned out: Not a good transition, with Robinson going just 10-37 overall and 3-25 in the Big East in four seasons. He's currently out of coaching.
Utah, Urban Meyer, 12-0, Kyle Whittingham, 7-5
How it turned out: Whittingham has continued Meyer's excellence, posting a 68-29 mark in nine seasons. His resume includes BCS bowl wins in the Fiesta and Sugar.
Washington, Keith Gilbertson, 1-10, Ty Willingham, 2-9
How it turned out: Ushered out amid controversy from Notre Dame, Willingham never managed a winning season at UW, fired after an 0-12 year in 2008. He's currently out of coaching.
