YALE— A mother and three of her children died Sunday afternoon in a head-on crash on State Highway 51, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
William L. Campbell, 17, of Pawnee, was driving eastbound when the car went off the road, overcorrected and went out of control before hitting an oncoming pickup head-on about 1 p.m., according to a patrol report.
Campbell's mother, Marissa L. Campbell, 37, of Pawnee, her toddler son and her 12-year-old daughter were killed in the crash, as well as Shane Horn, 16, of Pawnee, who was not related to them, trooper Betsy Randolph said.
The names of the 12-year-old girl and the toddler were not released Sunday.
Jesse J. Brown, 20, of Yale, who was driving the pickup was thrown from the vehicle. He was treated at a Tulsa hospital and released. His passenger, Cade A. Anderson, 14, of Yale, was flown to a Tulsa hospital where he was stabilized, troopers said.
The wreck, which occurred 2 miles west of Yale in Payne County, closed the highway for more than four hours.
Only the 17-year-old driver and the toddler were restrained in the vehicle, Randolph said. Alcohol is not suspected in the crash.
The teen's family said he had recently enlisted in the Marines, Randolph said.
“We want to encourage people to wear their seat belts and really encourage people to pay attention when they're behind the wheel,” she said.
