SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Five East High School students have been suspended and referred to police after a mobbing-style hazing incident at the school.
Mobbing involves upperclassmen surrounding their victims and hitting and punching them before welcoming them into a group.
Authorities say the incident occurred Nov. 20 in a hallway during lunch. No students were seriously injured or hospitalized.
No administrators witnessed the mobbing, but school officials say they know what happened based on student interviews.
East High Principal Paul Sagers says the school has a zero-tolerance hazing policy and has been told by police that some of the students will likely be charged with disorderly conduct.
