‘90 Minutes in Heaven' recalled in vivid detail

Don Piper says he died Jan. 18, 1989, in a head-on collision between a car and a semi on a stretch of Texas' Gulf Freeway during a rainstorm."In one powerful, overwhelming second, I died,” he writes in "A True Story of Death and Life — 90 Minutes In Heaven” (Revell, $12.99), co-authored by Cecil Murphey.

Piper recounts in vivid detail his time in heaven, seeing his grandfather, great-grandparents, school friends and others who had contributed to his becoming a Christian and eventually a Baptist minister.

"Heaven's life and texture defy earthly eyes or explanation,” Piper writes. "Warm, radiant light engulfed me. I could hardly grasp the vivid, dazzling colors. Every hue and tone surpassed anything I had ever seen. Everything felt blissful. Perfect.”

As quickly as he was in heaven, he was back on Earth, still trapped inside his 1986 Ford Escort and pronounced dead by emergency workers. His right leg was crushed. His left leg was shattered in two places. His left arm was dislocated.

A minister, Dick Onerecker, happened onto the scene and began praying for Piper.
