Once upon a time, a girl, a boy and two cats created a blog. The girl: a graphic designer and quirky fashionista. The boy: an electrical engineer with an unusually acute sense of style. The cats: Mr. Scooty Boots and Dinahsaur, garden variety. The result: Oklahoma blogosphere's best-kept secret, jeremyandkathleen.blogspot.com. If ever a cuter indie couple existed, I've yet to meet them. I like to think of the couple as a younger, cuter and hipper version of my husband and me. Kathleen and Jeremy Shannon started their blog two years ago while shopping for a home. The blog evolved to document the home renovations they undertook after finding their home in the Central Park neighborhood of Oklahoma City. It was Kathleen's oddball sense of style that prompted friends and co-workers to goad her into photographing her outfits every morning and posting them on the blog. "I get dressed based on my mood and how I'm feeling," she said. "If I need to feel like a badass, I dress like a badass. Sometimes I'm all Oklahoma hippie. Or like, I want to dress like an airline pilot. I just get really silly and have fun with it." Since she was a kid, Kathleen's fashion sense has fallen into the "I could never pull that off" category. Jeremy's more structured, as engineers tend to be. He has stacks of sweaters, stacks of T-shirts and stacks of jeans and pants. "He just rotates them out," Kathleen said. Now, each morning, whether they feel like it or not, the two take turns standing in their sunny little eat-in kitchen, photographing each other to post on the site, under the "J+K What We Wear" tab, complete with detailed descriptions of that day's wardrobe. Next came the recipes. She's a vegetarian, and he's a de facto vegetarian (a carnivore whose wife, and primary household chef, is a vegetarian). She has taken to posting photos and recipes of the various meat-free dishes she concocts. Recently, JeremyandKathleen.blogspot.com won the title "Best Kept Secret" in the 2009 Okie Blog Awards. Now, Kathleen has decided to give up her dependable 9-to-5 position as a senior art director at an ad agency to go it on her own, blogging and designing wedding invitations and other projects as a freelancer. She says it all started when the pair got married March 28, 2009. Kathleen decided to design her own wedding invitations. Their wedding and invitations were featured on a Glamour magazine blog. That recognition spurred lots of traffic to jeremyandkathleen.blogspot.com and resulted in several design opportunities for Kathleen. Soon, her invitation designs will be available online at www. etsy.com, an online haven for everything indie, vintage or DIY. On fashion: Mix proportions. If you're wearing something tiny on the bottom, wear something more conservative on top. Mix style concepts. Don't be afraid to pair pieces that don't traditionally go together. "Like, mix girly florals with cut-off biker boots," Kathleen said. Jeremy said, "Don't be scared to wear something that you don't feel comfortable in, because you eventually will." "Jeremy was the first guy I ever saw wearing a V-neck T-shirt. ... I thought it was so cool," Kathleen said. "I love finding interesting clothes," Jeremy said. "I enjoy sort of balancing looking good with looking interesting ... standing out." "We break a lot of rules because we don't know them," Kathleen said. "Or, you know some of the rules and then you break them because you know them."
