MAKING PROGRESS: The NHL and players' association got together for negotiations Saturday afternoon for the first time since a pair of small group sessions Thursday and kept talking well into the night. With a deadline to reach a deal in time to save the season less than one week away, the urgency to meet and work out their differences has risen. It is believed that a player vote has restored authorization to the executive board to declare a disclaimer of interest that would dissolve the union and turn it into a trade association. While no details of the talks were released by either side, the general feeling was that progress was being made. The latest round of talks was spurred on by federal mediator Scot Beckenbaugh, who met separately with each side for more than 12 hours Friday and then again Saturday morning before the sides got together at the union's hotel.
