Sam Bradford: the 74th Heisman Trophy winner.

"It’s going to be cool when we get back home,” he says.

Too bad for Bradford that Heisman winners don’t get to sleep much the day after winning the award.

Bradford; his parents Kent and Martha; family friend and Oklahoma Christian golf coach Kelsey Cline; OU sports information director Kenny Mossman; Rob Garguilo from the Heisman trust; two reporters; a photographer; and the Heisman Trophy comprise Bradford’s entourage Sunday.

Before the group leaves the Hilton, one man recognizes Martha from TV and says, "Your son is the best; everyone was talking about Tebow this, Tebow that, but your son...”

The first stop, about 8:25, is the Fox News Channel, where Bradford is a scheduled guest on Fox & Friends with Dave Briggs, Alisyn Camerota, and Clayton Morris.

First, Bradford is asked to pick four NFL games. He goes with the Panthers, Giants, Steelers and Jets.

Bradford is asked another a question he might as well get used to. Will he leave for the NFL Draft?

"We’ll see,” he says. "It’s a long time before I have to make that decision.”

Briggs, Morris and Bradford go outside to throw the football into a net on-air. Bradford, wisely, abstains.

Everyone worries Morris is going to overthrow the net and tag a cab driving down 6th Avenue. He doesn’t.

For the crew, Bradford signs a copy of Sports Illustrated that featured him on the cover last month before leaving the studio.

Bradford’s SportsCenter appearance is canceled, apparently because ESPN can’t get a truck out to Manhattan.

So, the group heads for the CBS College Sports studio.

On the way, Kent points out that he has never been to New York before and how amazing the city is.

Said Kent, "I can’t believe how many tall buildings there are.” Not a bad way to see New York for the first time, watching your son win the Heisman.

It’s 9:12, and the CBS studio is located at the Chelsea Piers.

There, Adam Zucker conducts a taped interview with Bradford. Zucker also interviewed Jason White the day after he won the Heisman in 2003.

"It hasn’t really fully hit me yet,” Bradford says. "Maybe in a couple weeks it will.”

Eventually, the elephant in the room is finally addressed.

"Jason White warned me that Billy Sims was going to yell ‘Boomer,’ and to be prepared to yell ‘Sooner’ back,” Bradford tells Zucker.

Bradford also says the team watched his cartwheel goal-line leap in Stillwater at least 10 times in slow motion.

"It was pretty interesting to watch,” he says.

To welcome Bradford, meanwhile, the CBS crew has had the Bedlam game playing on all the TVs.

After Martha declines, CBS convinces Kent to go on camera for a few minutes. At one point, a CBS producer interrupts the interview and asks both parents what they told Bradford growing up.

What is the secret formula?

Work hard? Dedicate yourself?

"No, we just told him that we love him,” Martha responds.

When Kent is done, he gets up and points to the chair, saying, "All right, Mar, you’re up.”

She laughs, but no way is she going on camera.

Bradford signs a copy of the New York Times sports section, which has a big picture of Bradford on the cover, for the producer’s son, a budding quarterback.

As everyone walks out of the studio at 9:58, the CBS TVs are about to show the Stillwater whirlybird, Bradford’s defining Heisman moment.

Bradford and Cline laugh as the play unfolds.

A few feet away, however, Martha isn’t laughing; she’s shaking her head.

But during the slow-motion replay, still shaking her head, Martha also lets out a smile.

Chill Nancy. ESPN talking heads may not appreciate it but let me tell you they LOVE showing the Sooners and hey why not we are pretty! As for Billy, it was a little awkward but hey I watched Billy play football and well after that Billy can say whatever he wants in my book.
Michael, coppell - Dec 16, 2008 at 2:20 pm
OU,NW I couldn't agree with you more about ESPN's coverage. I was very upset they put Stoops on with the Gators coach. I felt Stoops needed to have his own time to talk about what an outstanding player Sam was for him the past two years.

I don't know what ESPN has against OU, but I have had it with them this year. I sent an email to them after one game because I was so tired of "Herbie" pronouncing Gresham's name wrong over and over. I think all Sooner fans need to let them know how obviously biased their coverage was this year. All 3 boys seemed to be good role models. Sam deserved the trophy because of his football season. It was simply better than Tebow's.

Lastly, I am sorry, but I was tired of Sims' "Boomer" during the Heisman presentation. I think it is perfectly fine for him to say it once or twice for the excitement factor, but over and over was a bit much. He was NOT doing this just because of school pride. Those of you who think that was the reason should look at the footage again. You could tell by his actions he wanted to be in the spotlight. I think everyone in the room was ready for Billy to be quiet.

Shepard - Dont think that OU lacks motivation in ANY game. They will be prepared, the problem is execution in which opponents seem to throw a monkey wrench into somehow. The BCS losses were losses to the better team that night, no excuses - just fact. I dont think OU is going to wet its pants just because we are playing UF. If UF wins, its because they earned it.
Robert, Oklahoma City - Dec 15, 2008 at 10:02 pm
We'd better get off all this Heisman and Pro talk and get Sam back home to practice. We need to post this in the locker room: Asked if he thought his defensive teammates might have a little extra motivation now when they go up against Bradford, Tebow replied: "I've already gotten quite a few texts from some guys. ... I can't share those -- but they were good." We took the Heisman away from him, and his team is going to go after Sam. If anyone knows anyone in the Sooners organization personally, I'd say they need to get that to the coaches to use as motivation. We've got to get our guys as motivated as they are, and keeping them out in New York for 4 days isn't the answer. It's disrupting the Sooners rhythm, and if they don't get going Florida is going put a whoopin' on em. GET TO WORK!
Shepard, Stonewall - Dec 15, 2008 at 9:07 pm
If ending up with the Detroit Lions is what lays ahead for Bradford - he better stay at OU another year. Detroit has been the death sentence for former OU Heisman winners Owens & Sims, not to mention many other high draft picks with the exception to Barry Sanders (OSU).

Jay, sorry it's not in my control. Do you get on here to help you with your ED? What's really embarassing is the teams in the Big XII that are shamed by OU's loss' in the several BCS games they have played in, are beat soundly by OU the next season. Except of course the 45-35 victory in favor of the texans...on a neutral field of course (BS). Get on a board where you can say positive things about anything.

So what if McCoy was an All AMerican it isnt consensus so it is not a valid argument. Maybe if Mack had whined a little more he could have gotten McCoy some more sympathy votes.

Preach on Brother Jeffery!!! In case no one out there knows it...ESPN SUCKS. I'm sick of hearing about how texas was dealt an unfair hand. And how Florida should be playing texas. All the voters should have to play by the BCS rules. After all, most of them voted in favor of the BCS. As for the money. All of the money generated in Bowl games for each conference is divided up between the schools. Nuff said. Shutup Texas. Do your part and make a little money for the big 12. Nice job, way to go, we'll see ya later... Everybody knows you can't have your cake and eat it too!!! deal with it!! BOOMER SOONER!!!!!
Brennon, Granbury - Dec 15, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Alan -- you had better hope that your team is motivated to win a BCS game (for the first time in forever) -- not beat Mizzou. OU embarrasses the conferences every year with their BCS ineptitude. Do something different this season -- like WIN for a change.

I wonder which Big 12 school has brought the most money to the conference through BCS bowls? I am sure Oklahoma would be happy to keep what is theirs and let the rest of the Big 12 do the same. I bet Texas accepts the money from OU's appearance instead of declining it because OU shouldn't have been there. Any takers?
jeffery, Tampa - Dec 15, 2008 at 4:05 pm
If OU wins and the ESPN/ABC guys want to talk to Bob or Sam afterward, they should both say to ask Mack Brown or Timmy Tebow what they think since they're good at doing that.

Jay, if they handed out a heisman trophy for the idiot of the year, you would be in the top 3. You, joe, austin, and cooter, cooterville. It would be so close. I wonder how the Sooners would vote if they were the ones voting. Ya know, I haven't heard any fans, from the Big XII, complain about the BCS bowl money that OU brings home year after year that has to be split 12 ways (and helps support and build their programs). I'm sure the shorthorns could make a powerful statement by refusing it. Keep the negatives coming. It helps OU get motivated like it did with the Missouri pussycats.

For those of you who feel the need to persistently whine and moan about Sam Bradford and Oklahoma, get a life. Get over it. Admit the Sooners are far better than your teams ever hoped to be. Most of the negative posts on this very positive story are the results of extemely feeble minds trying to express themselves under intense duress and depression. OU scored more points than ANY team in NCAA history. They scored 60+ pts in each of the last 5 games (another 1st in NCAA history). They won their conference. And they are going to play in the national championship game. I could see how that might not sit well with those of you whose teams didn't accomplish much. But get over it. Get a life for yourselves. You know OU is Super, you just don't want to admit it in public. Have fun watching the lesser bowl games your teams might or might not play in.

Sam is a class act and deserved the Heisman.

The Sooners are about to embarrass the Big 12 once again in a BCS game. The one good thing is losing to Florida won't be as humiliating as losing to Boise State or West Virginia -- unless of course the Gators win by 40.

As for Billy Sims, this is nothing new. He does this at every Heisman presentation and appearance he makes. I don't see anything wrong with having some pride in your team and past accomplishments. I didn't see anyone on this post on the Heisman stage; he's earned the right to yell "Boomer." As for the anonymous post below, what bowl (or championship) is your team in? That's what I thought....

I don't think it will be a $10 million contract shoved at him. I think it will be more along the lines of $40 million for a five year deal, perhaps up to $50 million for 7 years. That's just my thinking, but it will be a big offer, and one analyst said if he announced for the draft he might be the first player selected.

Did anyone else also think that they stole Sam's shining moment when they brought Meyer in with Stoops after the clip on Sam? Brown got to talk about McCoy. And Bob didn't really get to say much about Sam. They started asking Urban Meyer about Tim and the upcoming game. I guess they felt they leveled the field by not bringing Meyer on again, but geez...can't you give each one their own time? This night was about them as outstanding players, not the upcoming game.

Jay, also, if OU had beaten Texas Tech by 10 points, Tech would have been in the argument. You short-horn fans are trying to have your cake and eat it too. You sound like Chris Fowler, saying " the Tech argument is not valid because they are not in the picture." Why? Because you don't want to to be. Let's say that the Tie Breaker had workded in favor of Tech. What kind of sense would that make? Not much sense the point is to get a team in the BCS NC game. The Big 12 is ahead of the curve. If OU had lost then Texas would have made it to the NC game. The big 12 had a chance for 2 teams to get in. We were almost guaranteed to get a team in.

Jay, did you read the article. I'm telling you, McCoy would have won the heisman if ESPN had not lobbied for Tebow. Most of the early votes were for McCoy. He was ahead in early in the voting. Jay, how can you even day that the reason they won is because of a win on a (not so) "neutral field"? I say that because then you're leaving out the fact that TT beat you guys. The neutral field part has nothing to do with a win or a loss, The home team doesn't get points added or taken away because they're at home. That's all a momentum thing. next argument please

I also have a lack of respect for ESPN. It began when they failed to publish the Davey O Brien award winner. If they did, it was in small print, on another day, after the award presentation. Their prejudice is so obvious.
And just for the record, I certainly don't think Billy Sims took the spotlight away from Sam. Were any of you Billy haters still thinking about him when Sam was giving his acceptance speech? If you were, then you missed a great speech. I rememeber Billy as an awesome runner. Maybe he has made a few mistakes in life. I'm sure the ones doggin Billy can walk on water.
And about neutral fields. When we play Texas, where are we at? What air are we breathing when were playing Texas. Who's gas are we buying? Who's restaraunts do we eat at? Who's hotels do we stay at? And for those that drink, who's alcohol do we consume? And finally, who's state fair do we attend and spend money at? This is where Oklahomans bedazzle me. The Texas AD calls the OU AD one day many years ago and said, "Let's play football on a neutral field." The OU AD says, "OK. Where?" The Texas AD said, "Texas." The rest is history with Texas holding the most wins record by far. Home and home, Okies. Like the rest of the Big XII.
I guess playing Florida is on a neutral field, too.

Bradford was most deserving of the Heisman. Texas is most deserving in the Big 12 to be in the BCS Championship game. No matter how you slice it -- they won (on a neutral field). All of this talk about media bias by people in the state is laughable -- especially considering how the Sooners are handled with kid gloves by the "professionals" in Oklahoma state media.

The wife-beating loser cannot seem to pay child support, but somehow finds a way to make it to Manhattan to ruin the moment for any OU player that happens to win the Heisman. I'm not an OU fan, so I think it's kind of funny. However, if I was an OU fan, I would be trying to find some way to make sure that loser knows that what he's doing is taking the spotlight away from the kid that deserves the attention and is making a joke of the whole thing. Not blaming NY Times, just trying to make a comparison of how tabloid-like they're becoming.
eudell, Virginia Beach - Dec 15, 2008 at 9:16 am
The columnist from the Dallas Morning News who said he was different from Jason White because he actually has talent must not like our beloved Sooners.

Some people were talking down Bradford last week. He deserves the Heisman. Congrads Sam. Go Sooners! National Title??

Bottom line, the Oklahoma Sooners have always had to defend themselves against the likes of Texas and Florida, but in this case the best guy won the Heisman and NO One not even ESPN, their announcers,No One can deminish this win. SAM BRADFORD is a top notch human being, and a great quarterback...GO Sooners.
Grace, Las Cruces - Dec 15, 2008 at 8:56 am
So...what toilet paper does Bradford prefer? I WANNA KNOW!
Chris, Jones - Dec 15, 2008 at 8:54 am
Hey Jake, Barry, or any other Daily Oklahoman sports writer. The next time you get a chance, would you do me a favor and throw your shoes at either Mack Brown or Colt McCoy at the next press conference? It doesn't matter which one.

Don't blame the New York Times. They have been one of the most fair at reporting the Sooners', and Bradford's, success this season. If you've been reading, they have provided the best print coverage of the team's unbelievable offensive output this year. Also, NYT is the most respected print newspaper in America. Have they made mistakes? Absolutely, just like all media have, and do. For example, it was the New York Times that supported the Bush Administration's efforts to lead us to war in Iraq, by publishing a series of stories on Saddam's alleged WMD and nuclear intentions.

Hmm...no offense to OSU, but Texas' constantly going on about 45-35 seems like what many OSU fans did after the games they won against OU in the 90s during the Sooners years in the wilderness, touting the score of a single game. After OSU beat OU in the 90s in Norman they spent quite a bit of time exclaiming 12-0, the score of a single game. Scream about it if it's your record for a season. Winning one game does not deserve the posting of a single score as the entire reflection of your program.
edwin, Tulsa - Dec 15, 2008 at 8:31 am
come on Adam....I'm an OU fan and even I know that Colt McCoy deserved it more than Tebo. And Graham Harrell should have been invited before Tebo. It should have been an all-Big 12 Heisman presentation. With Bradford winning of course.

Get a truck out to manhattan, doesn't ESPN have a studio there? why would they need a truck?
David, Moore - Dec 15, 2008 at 8:29 am
Bradford’s SportsCenter appearance is canceled, apparently because ESPN can’t get a truck out to Manhattan.

The Talking Heads were still ticked off. It's okay. I am sure they were busy planning who will win the National Championship.
Sharon, Tishomingo - Dec 15, 2008 at 8:24 am
Adam, Oh I see, another texas whiner! The best won!
Robert, Denver - Dec 15, 2008 at 8:21 am
Unbelievable. It sounds as though they were afraid that Bradford might say something like Stoops did and show them up for what they are.

It should have been Tim Tebow. Bradford is over-rated!!
Jason, Tulsa - Dec 15, 2008 at 8:10 am
OU in championship... Bradford winning Heisman... ESPN does not have the clout they anticipated... poor game day crew... so much wasted effort.

I've repeated this a few times but do you remember the sudden technical difficulties after the OSU game when they were interviewing Bob Stoops. Although he wasn't campaigning, really it was his platform taken away after they had defended Texas and Mack Brown all game. ESPN is the top dog, but they're like the New York Times. All style, rumor, speculation, innuendo, opinion, very little fact or substance. I watch it but take them with a grain of salt.
eudell, Virginia Beach - Dec 15, 2008 at 7:37 am
I'll bet if it was Tebow or McCoy, ESPN would have had a helicopter out to pick either one of them up..
Oswho, Philadelphia - Dec 15, 2008 at 6:59 am
ESPN has touted Texas, the SEC and USC all season.SEC this SEC that... They also fail to mention the Tech win against Texas. All we heard was 45-35. There going to eat a bunch more words when OU lights up the Gators.

What a load of #hit; txspn, flaspn, whatever you want to call them, hit a new low with me. This bunch has an agenda bigger than CNN does for the left faction of our country. Unreal.
