MORRISON — Two different but very connected legacies will come to an end at around 10 p.m. Friday, after the Class B state championship game at Mustang High School.

Morrison, which has won 12 Class B titles since 1984, is making the jump to 11-man football next season, thus ending a tradition of Wildcat dominance and power over the 8-man game. Morrison senior running back Ricky Holba, one of the top Morrison players in recent memory, will play his last high school football game, too.

"It would be the perfect ending (if Morrison wins Friday),” said third-year Morrison coach Cory Bales, who also played quarterback for the Wildcats in the late 1980s.

Junior tight end/defensive end Joey Quinata said: "(Friday's game) is gonna be emotional because it's our last 8-man game, and we want to walk out with that gold ball.”

The rise to the consistent top of Class B began in 1982, when then-coach and now superintendent Dennis Casey took over the program. The first state title came in 1984, and the rest have come at a fairly regular rate since.

Morrison's success has bred success at other programs through coaches who are former Wildcats. Pond Creek coach David Kerr, his brother, former Pioneer coach John Kerr, and Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford are Morrison graduates. They made those respective programs forces in Class B.
