On Tuesday, voters in southern Illinois' Johnson County will decide a non-binding referendum about the high-volume drilling practice called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The ballot measure essentially serves as an advisory to the county's commissioners about how their constituents feel about fracking, with a "Yes" vote basically reflecting apprehensiveness about or opposition to the debated drilling technique locally.

The ballot's question reads: "Shall the people's right to local self-government be asserted by Johnson County to ban corporate fracking as a violation of their rights to health, safety and a clean environment?"
