Big 12 football preview: A look at the Big 12's widespread coaching changes

Kliff Kingsbury is the Big 12's only new head coach in 2013. But there are plenty more important coaching changes, including at OSU and OU.

Kliff Kingsbury is the Big 12's only new head coach in 2013. But that doesn't mean there aren't more coaching changes.

OSU has new coordinators in Mike Yurcich and Glenn Spencer. Yurcich was hired away from Division II Shippensburg to run the OSU offense, replacing Todd Monken, who became head coach at Southern Miss. And Spencer was promoted to defensive coordinator after Mike Gundy decided to replace Bill Young.

Texas has a new offensive coordinator in former Longhorn quarterback star Major Applewhite, replacing Bryan Harsin, who became head coach at Arkansas State.

West Virginia has a new defensive coordinator in Keith Patterson, who replaces Joe DeForest in a simple staff, after the Mountaineers' defensive travails last season.

Perhaps most notably, Bob Stoops fired three staff members at OU. Stoops fired no coaches his first 13 years in Norman but now has fired four in two years.

Stoops has refused to discuss the particulars of his staff changes, but he hasn't shied away from the overall theme.

“We needed to win 12 or 13 games instead of 10,” Stoops said. “Ten isn't good enough and co-champs isn't good enough. We're trying to overall do everything in our program a little better. Hopefully we'll coach better.

“Hopefully our players have worked harder in the offseason to be more prepared to make plays when they can make them. That's what we're trying to do.”
