AAA Oklahoma is urging motorists to take action now – to save the Monopoly race car player token. The race car is one of the earliest Monopoly game tokens, introduced in 1935 and popular ever since.

Now, the beleaguered game piece is in danger of getting sent to the junkyard and needs a roadside assist from loyal motoring fans, so AAA is launching a social media campaign to save the little metal roadster.

Hasbro, Monopoly’s maker, plans to retire one of its classic game tokens: either the race car, iron, Scottie dog, wheelbarrow, shoe, top hat, thimble or battleship. The token with the lowest votes goes permanently to jail and won’t pass go anymore. Fans can vote until Feb. 5 for the one they want to keep.  (At right: image from Hasbro Web site)

“Without the race car, how else are you going to get anywhere?" jokes Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma. "The race car is the only automotive token in the Monopoly game. Millions of motorists will be heartbroken if it disappears.

"Imagine playing the game and not getting to be the race car. It would be a crushing disappointment to everyone who dreams of getting behind the wheel as they race around Park Place. AAA Oklahoma is committed to keeping these wheels in the game.”
