The man was last seen on the property of the Dolese Brothers Co., 5600 W Reno Ave., according to a police report. Police officers and a K-9 unit searched the area for the suspected shoplifter but never found him.
The man was attempting to steal clothing, including pants, overalls and jeans, according to the report. McCool said he does not believe the man successfully stole any items from the store.
McCool said DHS took custody of the child at the scene and police were informed late Monday afternoon that nobody had come forward in regard to the boy.
Police worked with DHS on Tuesday to gather information related to the case. McCool said he decided Tuesday to issue a news release this morning.
"In the norm when these things happen, it's a very short period of time and mom or somebody else is showing up, saying, ‘I need to pick up my child,'” McCool said. "That hasn't happened. ... It's extremely unusual (that) after five days nobody has come forward.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the police child abuse unit at 297-1124 or Crime Stoppers at 235-7300.
