AD WATCH

Ryan Leonard's ad analyzed

Editor's note: This is one of a series analyzing broadcast advertisements in the state political races. Former congressional aide and attorney Ryan Leonard is running against former state Sen. Scott Pruitt for the Republican nomination for attorney general. Attorney General Drew Edmondson, who has held the office for 16 years, is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor. Oklahoma hasn't had a Republican attorney general since G.T. Blankenship, who was in office from 1967-71. The primary is Tuesday.

What the ad says: "Scott Pruitt is shopping for another job. He's tried for Congress and lieutenant governor. Now, attorney general. Pruitt advertises himself as a constitutional lawyer. But official Oklahoma records show he's never tried a case, and worse — Pruitt's never put a criminal behind bars. Now Pruitt wants us to buy that he's concerned about illegal immigration — even though he voted to give taxpayer subsidies to illegal aliens. Scott Pruitt, don't buy it." (In the background a woman's voice says, "Clean up, aisle 10.") The ad is paid for by the Ryan Leonard campaign and began running Friday.

What he ad shows: A man walking through a grocery store selecting items with Pruitt's image and putting them into his cart.

Analysis: Pruitt, a Republican from Broken Arrow, is the managing partner and co-owner of the Oklahoma City RedHawks baseball team. He had a failed bid for a Congressional seat in 2001. Pruitt sought the Republican party's nomination for lieutenant governor in 2006, losing to Todd Hiett.
