WASHINGTON — The U.S. military is reinforcing the sides of its topline mine-resistant vehicles to shore up what could be weak points as troops see a spike in armor-piercing roadside bombings across Iraq, The Associated Press has learned.

Judge backs terrorism evidence
A federal magistrate judge recommends not throwing out evidence found in the luggage of a man accused of aiding terrorists.

Syed Ahmed argued books and personal writings found during an August 2005 search at Atlanta's airport should not have been copied by authorities.

Ahmed and Ehsanul Sadequee, both U.S. citizens, are accused of discussing terrorism targets with Islamic extremists and undergoing training to carry out a "violent jihad.”

U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerrilyn Brill says the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act allowed examination and seizure of the materials. A U.S. District Court judge has final say.

The men have pleaded not guilty to providing material support to terrorists and related conspiracy counts. No trial date has been set.

U.S. coalition kills Afghan insurgents
The U.S.-led coalition says its troops have killed several militants in southern Afghanistan.

A statement Friday said the militants were involved in weapons smuggling in the Helmand province.

Insurgents on Thursday attacked the coalition troops, who responded with small arms fire and called in airstrikes. The troops recovered weapons and ammunition from the militants following the raid.

The U.S. Marines pushed into Garmser late last month aiming to open a route to move troops to the southern reaches of Helmand, a center of the Taliban-led insurgency.
