Sen. Connie Johnson, D-Oklahoma City, is seeking reform in the distribution of state money across the elderly health care forum, ranging from home health services to adult day services to nursing homes.

“Right now, there is a disproportionate rate for what we’re paying for senior health care across the spectrum,” Johnson noted. “We need to have more balance. Home health services and nursing homes are receiving big money. That’s because they have the powerful lobbyists.”

Johnson wants to increase the daily $45 rate adult day centers receive per client.

“This is going to be an awareness-raising venture,” Johnson said. “Business and economics legislation is always the priority. Social service programs usually are placed on the lower end of the totem pole. But there is a growing need for adult day services.

“My colleagues either don’t know or they don’t care.”
