Some of the students who were learning about firefighting and environmental law this summer may seem a bit on the young side, but they brought their own seasoned chaperones.
Since 2002, the OSU Alumni Association has welcomed OSU legacies, ages 7 to 13, and their grandparents to campus for a unique intergenerational learning experience at Grandparent University.
About 500 children created memories with their grandparents while getting a bit of an OSU education during two three-day sessions this summer.
The 2014 Grandparent University was the largest in the program’s history.
The legacies enrolled in one of several majors. After completing the program, they “graduated” with a certificate. They also had time to socialize while swimming at the Colvin Center or cheering at an OSU tailgate.
The young students chose from several classes: agribusiness, chemistry FUNdamentals, entomology, fire protection, firefighting, flowers in horticulture, food science, illegal dumping and environmental law enforcement, Oklahoma geology, On the Trail of Trash, strategic communications or water resource management.
Grandparent University is one of the benefits of being a member of the OSU Alumni Association. A legacy is a child who is registered in the legacy program under a parent or grandparent who is an active member of the OSU Alumni Association.
Grandparents are encouraged to check their legacy’s registration and membership status by calling the OSU Alumni Association at 405-744-5368.
Grandparents whose grandchildren have gotten too old to attend GPU can still enjoy the fun. GPU needs grandparents who are familiar with campus and Grandparent University. If you are a grandparent and have participated in Grandparent University for more than two years and would like to volunteer as a host, contact Melisa Parkerson at 405-744-8711.
