Advocates express disability concerns at Oklahoma Capitol

Nearly 700 people filled the Capitol rotunda Thursday to raise awareness about the contributions people with disabilities can make to their community.

The state Department of Rehabilitation Services organized the event, which included booths, entertainment and opportunities for people to speak with lawmakers.

For Michelle Floyd of Stillwater, it was a chance to tell lawmakers people with disabilities want to make a difference and want to work. Floyd, 30, has multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair.

"It’s important for people to realize that we want to make something out of our lives,” she said. "I just have a disability. It’s just a part of life. I’m happily paying taxes to help support services that allow us to benefit as people, that allow us to benefit financially and help us to contribute to our communities.
