Advocates hail bill to boost cancer research
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is being honored for his work to boost research on cancers with low survival rates.
The Rhode Island Democrat was presented Monday with an award from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network for his work to increase research on cancers that are difficult to detect and treat, including those of the pancreas, liver, lungs and ovaries.
Whitehouse, advocates and officials from Lifespan held a news conference Monday at Hasbro Children's Hospital to celebrate passage of the senator's Recalcitrant Cancer Research Act. The act directs the National Cancer Institute and others to work toward advancing research on cancers with five-year survival rates below 50 percent.
President Barack Obama signed it into law last month.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network gave Whitehouse its "Champion of Hope" award.
