Mail carriers collected more than 630,000 pounds of food to benefit the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma during the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday.

The Oklahoma City area branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers collected about 458,000 pounds of that amount, officials said. The rest came from other communities and counties served by the food bank.

Residents left bags of nonperishable food near their mailboxes.

The national Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive benefits Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma receive food from the national charity.

Last year, area carriers collected nearly 480,000 pounds of nonperishable foods and carriers nationwide collected a record 73.1 million pounds. Oklahoma food banks distributed more than 32.2 million pounds of food in 2008.
