COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairwoman Allison Macfarlane says the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in southwestern Michigan is improving its performance and operating safely.

Palisades has had numerous shutdowns in recent years and was downgraded in 2012 to a category designating the nation's worst performing nuclear plants.

But the NRC moved the plant back to the list of top performers the same year and it remained there in the most recent assessment.

Macfarlane and U.S. Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan toured Palisades in Van Buren County's Covert Township and the D.C. Cook plant in Berrien County's Lake Township on Friday.

Macfarlane said she visited the control room and saw a formerly leaky tank that had been fixed.

She also met with community activists who have raised safety issues about both plants.
