Former NHL player, Blazers coach Mike McEwen says AHL club would be a step up
Mike McEwen said fans can expect "a lot better hockey” if and when the Triple-A American Hockey League comes to Oklahoma City.
The former Blazers coach was surprised when told Thursday the current Central Hockey League franchise, which is of Double-A caliber, said it would not play the 2009-10 season. The move is expected to clear the way for an AHL team, perhaps for the 2010-11 season. The city has been mentioned in media reports in the last year as an AHL candidate, particularly as the No. 1 farm team for the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers. McEwen, who coached the Blazers over the 1992-95 seasons, played 716 games and won three Stanley Cups as an NHL defenseman.
