DALLAS -- Airlines warn that Tropical Storm Edouard could scramble air travel in Texas, causing delays and flight cancelations over the next couple of days.
The carriers recommended Monday that passengers call ahead to make sure flights are still on schedule. Continental Airlines Inc. said that with weather conditions likely to worsen, it expects delays and cancellations at airports in the region through Wednesday. The Houston-based airline said it would waive rescheduling fees for customers who want to delay trips that were scheduled to or from Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport, San Antonio and Austin through Wednesday. But passengers will have to plan new travel to begin no later than Aug. 13. Passengers whose flights are canceled can request a refund in the original form of payment, Continental said. Southwest Airlines Co. issued a travel advisory for Houston due to the storm, which was expected to make landfall in Louisiana or southeastern Texas on Tuesday. The Dallas-based carrier said flights to and from Houston's Hobby Airport were running on schedule Monday afternoon but that Tuesday flights could be disrupted. The airline said it would allow customers traveling to or from Houston through Tuesday to rebook on another flight in the next 14 days without penalty. American Airlines, a unit of Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., also enacted a fee-waiver policy when Edouard hit hurricane watch-status Monday afternoon, a spokesman said. Delta Air Lines Inc. said it would let customers on flights to, from or through Houston, Austin and San Antonio through Wednesday to change without fee if they travel by Aug. 10. US Airways Group Inc. waived change fees for Houston flights until Wednesday night if people take another flight within seven days of the original one. United also waived fees who passengers who wanted to rebook Monday or Tuesday travel in Houston, San Antonio and Austin. United is a unit of UAL Corp. Northwest Airlines Corp. waived fees for travelers to or from Bush International in Houston to pick another flight Monday or Tuesday with no fee.
