AirTran Airways will begin new nonstop service from Oklahoma City to Atlanta this fall.

Two flights will depart daily from Will Rogers World Airport to AirTran's hub, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, starting Nov. 3. Delta Air Lines now offers the only nonstop flight to Atlanta — the ninth most popular destination for Oklahoma City travelers.

“The Atlanta market has been dominated by Delta for years. This introduces additional competition and a low-fare carrier into the market,” said Karen Carney, a spokeswoman for Will Rogers World Airport. It also opens up connection opportunities for travelers, especially to cities in Florida and the Caribbean.

AirTran, which was acquired by Southwest Airlines in 2011, has never offered service at Will Rogers World Airport. It will use Boeing 717 aircraft to operate the flights, a slightly smaller plane than the 737s that make up Southwest's fleet.

AirTran customers will use Southwest's ticket counter and gates at the airport, Carney said. Flights will depart Oklahoma City at 7 a.m. and 5:25 p.m. daily. Tickets are being offered for sale now at www.southwest.com.

Additionally, AirTran will take over Southwest's daily nonstop from Will Rogers World Airport to Chicago's Midway International Airport. As of Aug. 10, Southwest will no longer offer nonstop service to Kansas City.
