Roads across the Oklahoma slowly improved Friday, but abandoned cars littering streets and highways hampered plowing and salting efforts as the state began to thaw.
Many Oklahoma residents and stranded travelers spent Christmas digging their vehicles out of snow drifts. Some were stuck in driveways, some in ditches, some in streets and some in the middle of major highways. No type of vehicle was spared as cars, sport utility vehicles, pickups, tractor-trailer rigs, delivery trucks and snow plows dotted the landscape like an apocalypse-themed blockbuster film. Authorities are still discouraging any travel on the state’s roads. Snow plows were forced to plow around many abandoned vehicles throughout the state, officials said.Streets beginning to thaw in state
All interstate highways and turnpikes in Oklahoma re-opened by Friday afternoon, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. All interstates and turnpikes had been ordered closed on Thursday evening.
Conditions on city streets, county roads and other major highways remained hit-or-miss Friday, but also were slowly improving, authorities said.
