All-State Players Named

Oklahoman Published: December 25, 1988

The procedure for selecting the Coaches Association All-State football team underwent some changes this year, but one rule that's still the same prevents one of the state's top players from competing in next summer's annual all-star clash.

Only two players from one school are eligible to play in the All-State game. As a result Lawton star linebacker James Trapp was left off the All-State team. Lawton tailback Dewell Brewer, The Oklahoman's Player of the Year, and defensive end Will Shields, The Oklahoman's Lineman of the Year, were the Wolverines' two nominees.

Changes made this season included: 1) Each class must have at least two All-Staters on both the East and West squads; 2) Every state champion must have at least one representative and 3) Each class, East and West, selected a "first team" for the committee to consider.

The All-State football game will be played July 28 at Skelly Stadium in Tulsa.
