KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two Oklahoma City singers were among hundreds at Kemper Arena on Wednesday and Thursday registering for a chance to compete on "American Idol.”
Juliana Johnson and Argentino Cargile will get their first opportunity during auditions today. Johnson, 18, is not new to tryouts for the popular competition. In 2007, the country singer auditioned in Atlanta and South Carolina. She was called back after her South Carolina performance and eventually auditioned for "American Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. "I sang a few songs, and he gave me some good feedback, but said I was a little too young,” said Johnson, a Horseheads, N.Y., native who cited a better environment for country music for her recent move to Oklahoma City. Cargile, who grew up singing in church choirs, won KOKH Channel 25's "Fox Idol” competition. "Idol” staffers at Kemper Arena predicted long lines would begin forming at 4:30 a.m. Friday, with auditions beginning at 5 a.m. Johnson, accompanied by her mother, Janice Johnson, said she planned to practice and get plenty of sleep before her early morning arrival. Cargile, who became a father three weeks ago and cites that as his chief inspiration for the audition, said he would exercise and make plans for his future in Hollywood.
