BACKGROUND
Ammunition plant
The plant produces 500-pound, 1,000-pound, 2,000-pound and 5,000-pound bombs. It also makes the 21,000-pound Massive Ordinance Air Burst bomb, also known as the Mother of All Bombs. Once created in McAlester, the "dumb” bombs are sent to other locations to be fitted with a guidance kit, which converts them into "smart bombs.” The plant has produced ammunition since it opened in 1943.
