BERLIN, Conn. (AP) — Authorities say five people were injured in central Connecticut when an Amtrak train traveling at about 70 mph struck a truck towing a wood chipper.

Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz says the accident happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. Monday at a private crossing in Berlin (BURR'-lihn). Police say one of the injured people was in the truck. The severity of the injuries isn't clear.

Police are investigating why the truck was on the tracks. Officials say the truck was owned by a tree-trimming company.

About 45 passengers were on the train headed from New Haven to Springfield, Massachusetts. Uninjured passengers were bused to Springfield. Amtrak service in central Connecticut was suspended.

Late Sunday, another Amtrak train struck a vehicle in Mansfield, Massachusetts, killing three people. The cause is under investigation.
